Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placement Program (STE) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural and cultural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

 

Tamástslikt Cultural Institute is part of Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and a tribal partner to Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. This institute has actively worked to create space and interpretive programming on the customs and practices of the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla Tribes through interactive displays and special events. This intern program, sponsored by the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, is designed to help with the interpretation and history of Tamástslikt Cultural Institute. This will be accomplished by learning the history and culture of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation to educate and inspire visitors to Tamástslikt.

 

The intern will also engage with the Lewis and Clark Trail team on a monthly basis to make connections and bridge communications.

 

Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail was designated by Congress to commemorate the 1803 to 1806 Corps of Discovery expedition. Working with partners like Tamástslikt Cultural Institute, there is a shared identity for preservation of historic, cultural, and natural resources associated with tribal partners and the expedition in U.S. and tribal history. This epic journey contributed significant scientific knowledge and profound political, social, economic, cultural, and environmental changes to the peoples and landscapes of the North American continent.

 

The intern will work to interpret the history and culture of both the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and the Umatilla, Cayuse, and Walla Walla cultures at Tamástslikt Cultural Institute. The work will involve giving talks, interpreting natural and historic features, answering questions, guiding tours, and providing miscellaneous services to visitors, and engage in outreach activities.

 
Description of Duties:

Qualifications:

United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alienAt least 18 years of ageAgrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.Enrolled in a post-secondary educational institutionLanguage diversityCPR/First Aid Knowledge of Cayuse, Umatilla, or Walla Walla history and cultureAbility and willingness to engage in public speaking

 Time Requirements:

Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday to Friday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half-hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service. Members may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term. Members must commit to a 36-to-40-hour work week schedule to meet AmeriCorps Ed Award Requirements.

 

Orientation and Training:

Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities. Member will receive a Stewards New Member Orientation with assigned program support. Stewards will provide at Stewards 101 Training within the beginning of the term ‘s start to familiarize member with Stewards Model and service expectations amongst peers. Member will receive training, be provided with resources to study, and work directly with Lewis and Clark interpretative Center and Fort Mandan Historic Site’s Interpretative Coordinator and Interpretative Resource Specialist.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
