Investigative Reporter

7 News in Washington, DC has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Investigative Reporter to join our accountability driven 7 News On Your Side team. We are looking for a journalist who digs deeper with a relentless pursuit for answers on a daily basis. We're interested in candidates with a proven track record of impactful reporting, deep knowledge of researching and sorting through data to find the storylines. You must have a firm grasp of multi-platform reporting, publishing the story as it is happening and engaging with our viewers. You must have the instinct to jump in on major breaking news to add context to our coverage. Our investigators are our experts on topics that impact our viewers and should be editorial leaders. We work together as a team so you should be good at collaborating with our Leadership Team, Photojournalists, and legal department. We want someone who has strong storytelling skills and knows how to create visualizations to showcase your work. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Develop and maintain contacts and sources to enterprise story ideas Identify and pitch original investigative angles to stories Have strong writing skills, revealing new information and showcasing process journalism Investigations can be visually challenging so you must be able to creatively produce your stories Be flexible and knowledgeable, to quickly react to breaking stories providing deeper context and information on behalf of our communities – “being the voice of the voiceless” Embrace a multi-platform approach to storytelling Maintain an active social media presence to build your brand and engage with followers Knowledge of the legal land mines pertaining to investigations and how to avoid them Know how to target FOIA requests to find the storylines and get answers Embrace data driven journalism and how to visually tell those stories Other 7 ON YOUR SIDE reporting duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 4 years of experience working as an investigator and/or general assignment reporter Proven track record of advocacy journalism, holding the powerful accountable Understand how to respectfully ask tough questions Experience working with hidden cameras
