Requirements
Georgetown University Police Department’s mission is to protect the Georgetown University community, ensuring a safe and secure learning and living environment through trusting partnerships and professional police services. The Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) provides security and police services on the Georgetown University Main and Medical Center campuses and off campus properties. Utilizing foot patrols, vehicles and bicycles, the officers patrol the campus twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
The Investigator investigates criminal and non-criminal incidents, conducting follow-up investigations and providing detailed written reports. The incumbent directs personnel during crime scene investigations, maintaining criminal/non-criminal statistics and submitting comprehensive written reports concerning same to Detective Sergeant and/or Deputy Chief. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:
Maintain logs and all property coming into possession of the Georgetown University Police Department.
Participate in formal and informal meetings with students and other members of the campus community, advising others in security related matters when needed.
Present lectures on Crime Prevention methods and other police related subjects to members of the Department, University staff, faculty, and students.
Accept job-related hazards and functions in stressful situations as necessary, working extended hours to achieve the Department’s established goals.
Work as assigned/required to work rotating tours as needed, obtaining and maintaining an SPO commission and serving as a patrol officer at times.
Work Interactions
The incumbent is directly responsible to the Investigative Police Sergeant or designee for fulfilling duties assigned, performing investigative functions and specialized assignments according to all special and general orders in the protection of life and property at Georgetown University. This person works independently with minimal direct supervision. The incumbent works with other Investigations Officers, Police Officers, Communication Officers and Specialists, Security Officers, and Student Guards.
This position is considered essential under the University Personnel policy guidelines and therefore is subject to be on call when necessary. The incumbent must be willing to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department. This may include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to departmental needs.
Requirements and Qualifications
High School Diploma (or equivalent)
At least 3 years, preferably more, of security related/law enforcement/military experience in community policing and/or investigation; An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered in lieu of above requirements
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications
Must be a U.S. Citizen and at least 21 years of age
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with no violations in the last three years and able to pass Georgetown University driver’s certification
Must qualify for a Special Police Officer’s Commission and be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation
All applicants are subject to a written test, a report writing test, drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to University specifications, and extensive psychological testing
Must be comfortable using computers including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email and/or the ability to learn these applications
Knowledge of telecommunications equipment with administrative and clerical skills are a plus
Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Special Police Officer Commission and be able to complete all required university police training to include certification in Arrest Control Tactics, Baton, and OC-based Aerosol Subject Restraint; Training includes successful completion of the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy usually during the probation period or equivalent training and certification from a civilian or military law enforcement academy
Intermediate knowledge of criminal and civil law and police policies and procedures
Must have some training in law enforcement operations and investigative procedures
Previous experience and/or training in crime scene preservation and collection of evidence preferred
Must possess tact, patience, a professional and courteous demeanor, and a pleasant personality in order to deal with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members
Must respect the use of police powers with excellent verbal and written communications skills, including report writing
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
Ability to move heavy items daily up to 10lbs of weight
Frequently required to move up to 50lbs of weight and walk or stand with operation of controls
Occasionally tasked with moving items weighing up to 100lbs
