As part of Group Legal at Roche Headquarters in Basel, you will be focusing on leveraging IP for business development. Your role will be to conduct due diligences and provide IP support, deal structuring and negotiations for business development activities. It is a development opportunity for attorneys to gain exposure to a wide range of IP work within Roche’s Pharma business.
The Opportunity:Conduct comprehensive due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, partnerships, and licensing deals.
Assess strength, scope, and validity of IP assets, including patents and trade secrets.
Perform freedom-to-operate (FTO) analyses to identify risks and infringement issues.
Evaluate patent landscape for key technologies and products.
Identify and flag significant IP issues like potential patent invalidity or FTO risks.
Provide IP expertise in drafting and negotiating agreements (e.g., licensing, collaboration) and ensure IP-related clauses align with Roche’s strategic interests.
Review and advise on IP provisions in various contracts and work closely with business development, legal, R&D, and commercial teams to align strategies.
Provide IP guidance to cross-functional teams and communicate IP issues and risks to non-IP stakeholders.
Stay informed of changes in IP laws affecting Roche’s assets and activities.
Who You Are:Advanced degree in chemistry, biology, biomedicine, or biochemistry, preferably with a PhD.EQE qualification and/or Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and admission to the State Bar of your location and the USPTO
3-5 years in IP law, focusing on pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, or life sciences.
Knowledge of biologics, nucleic acid-based therapies, and gene therapies. Understanding of US, Chinese, and EU patent/regulatory laws, with a commitment to expanding such knowledge.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Additionally high professionalism, integrity, and attention to detail.
Self-Management: Ability to handle multiple projects, work independently, and manage pressure.
Client Orientation: Proven track record of service mindset and ability to serve as a single IP representative in due diligence teams.
Additional Advantages: Experience with regulatory bodies like FDA, EMA. Strong drafting and negotiation skills. Familiarity with regulatory, antitrust, and contract law relevant to pharmaceuticals. Qualification as a national patent attorney (e.g., German, UK).
