Overview:

The Irrigation Technician, under the supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent or other supervisor(s), is responsible for the programming, operation and maintenance of the golf course irrigation system(s). The Irrigation Technician is required to report any irregularities in course turf quality to the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.

 

Responsibilities:

Waters greens, tees and fairways. Operates irrigation heads in dry areas needing additional water. Repairs the irrigation system, pipes and irrigation heads as needed. Completes requests for irrigation and course parts and supplies. Repairs greens with seeds or plugs of new grass when needed. Grades and prepares soil base, lays sod and seeds greens, tees and fairways. Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions while repairing irrigation equipment. Maintains a clean, safe, work environment, pump station, and service vehicle. Maintains a clean and well-organized parts inventory room. Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with other employees and the public. Mechanical ability; ability to use common mechanical tools. Operates dump trucks and other light equipment in hauling materials and removing debris. Occasionally supervises a small labor force for special projects, and performs other duties as directed by immediate supervisor(s). Performs routine safety inspections, maintenance, and cleaning on all application equipment. Maintain chemical storage and mixing areas in compliance with departmental, tribal, and federal regulations. Responsible for the safety and direction of chemical handlers and/or helpers. Qualifications, Education, and/or Experience

Working knowledge of basic electricity and hydraulics related to an irrigation system, including automatic valves and controllers, working knowledge of various types of pumps and pumping systems. Understanding of agronomy, turf grass science and the rules of golf. Knowledge of tools, methods and materials used in grounds and landscape area maintenance work. Ability to operate light motorized equipment. Ability to follow oral, written, and mathematical directions. If deemed necessary, must complete training requirements as demanded by tribal and federal governments, including those required by the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard. If additionally necessary, a current tribal/state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator and an American Red Cross first-aid training certificate. Complete knowledge of chemical application equipment. Knowledge in the safe mechanical operation and calibration of the following types of specialized application equipment: Mechanically pressurized spray equipment Hand-operated spray equipment Hand-operated rotary spreaders Hand-operated drop spreaders Mechanically operated utility tractors and spreaders Usage of personal protective equipment is not an option, it is a job requirement!

 

Language Skills

Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to interpret documents and reports. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small groups situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. Draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems and situations reasonably.

Valid California driver’s license.

The employee is occasionally required to use fingers, hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms. Employee must regularly lift up to 50 pounds and/or occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet, hot, cold, warm, and/or humid outside weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic and/or caustic chemicals. Chemical Application & Fertilizer Addendum

This addendum is provided as an extension to the current job description. This additional aspect of employment falls under the direct supervision of the golf course superintendent or assistant superintendent. As a responsibility of employment, this position requires participation in and the ability to perform chemical or fertilizer applications. Areas of treatment will include (but not limited to) golf course properties, landscaping, and other areas as required or necessary. This addendum also extends the “Reasoning Ability” section of the current job description.
