IT Director - Data and Data Product Governance

The Analytics and Innovation group is seeking a strategic, forward thinking Director of Data Governance to lead and mature our enterprise wide data governance and data product governance capabilities. Operating in a Microsoft Azure and SAP-centric environment, this leader will be responsible for building trust in data, enabling self-service, and unlocking value chain, cross functional value through reusable data products. This role goes beyond governance traditional policy and compliance; it’s about building a connected, transparent, and business-aligned data ecosystem across a highly interdependent enterprise. The Director will work closely with product owners, data stewards, custodians, and business leaders to elevate the maturity of data governance, from tactical enforcement to strategic business partnership. This role will also serve as a key data partner to the business, specifically focusing on midstream functions within the oil and gas sector (logistics, pipelining, terminals, and Gathering & Processing). Accountable for business results primarily achieved through the work of others. Manages staff, sets direction, and deploys resources. Key Responsibilities + Lead the enterprise data governance program, covering data quality, metadata, classification, access controls, and stewardship. + Oversee governance tooling (e.g., Microsoft Purview, Profisee, SAP MDG), shaping the roadmap to match organizational needs. + Implement reusable data product governance standards and promote a “data as a product” mindset to drive enterprise reuse. + Establish lifecycle and value tracking for data products to ensure measurable business impact. + Guide integration of Databricks Unity Catalog with Purview to enable end-to-end data lineage and visibility. + Evaluate and implement data observability tools to proactively monitor data health and reliability. + Define and track KPIs to measure governance maturity, adoption, and business outcomes. + Manage and mentor Data Product Managers, aligning agile delivery through the SAFe framework. + Partner with midstream business units to ensure alignment between data strategy and operational goals. + Facilitate collaboration between data teams and stakeholders, translating business needs into actionable data strategies. + Leads managers and IT professionals through guidance, coaching, and support to ensure assignments are completed in accordance with established guidelines, policies, and procedures. Understands the overall organizational vision and translates it into team goals aligned with departmental and organizational goals. Creates a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement and leads teams through periods of change and transformation. + Collaborates and provides strategic guidance to key stakeholders, department heads, and senior management on technology-related matters including risks, opportunities, potential impacts, and prioritization. Ensures cost-effective technology solutions are in place to meet those needs and is able to respond with agility to changing business priorities. + Oversees the planning, design, implementation, and measurement of IT systems and ensures a balance between growing the agility required to achieve business objectives and ensuring core IT functions are reliable, stable, secure and efficient. + Provides guidance on the implementation of large or complex projects and oversees progression while ensuring the department program portfolio is managed effectively through governance and planning processes. Engages in initiatives as needed to facilitate the realization of value and work with sponsorship to evaluate the achievement of value. + Manages the department budget and financial resources including but not limited to technology services, software, hardware, and expense tracking ensuring the most effective use to maximize outcomes. + Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders on the development of the technology capability roadmap. + Collaborates on the development of IT policies, procedures, and standards, ensuring they are up to date and in line with area of responsibility and industry standards. Ensures compliance with established policies, procedures, and standards. + Collaborates with management on the design of an organizational structure and operating model to meet business objectives. Leads the organizational change initiatives, ensuring smooth transition with minimal disruption. + Responsible for recruitment, development, retention, performance management, and succession planning that will lead to a strong talent pipeline. Education and Experience + Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Engineering, Business, or other computer-related degree required. + 12+ years of diversified IT experience required. + 5+ years managing high-level professional staff required + Strong technical understanding of Azure data services, Purview, Profisee, SAP MDG, data quality, and data catalog/lineage tools. + Proven ability to lead cross-functional governance initiatives in complex, matrixed organizations. + Experience driving self-service enablement, stewardship engagement, and metadata enrichment. + Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills—able to influence at all levels of the business. + Experience with SAFe agile framework. + Knowledge of midstream oil and gas operations and data requirements. + Experience managing data product managers.
