IT Monitoring & Performance Engineer

The IT Monitoring & Performance Engineer has responsibility for the creation and refinement of Monitoring Service policies, processes and procedures for application, system software and infrastructure monitoring of ING Bank Italy and other production systems and infrastructures. It has also responsibility to prepare, run and analyze performance tests result and to support the IT Capacity process.

 

The IT Monitoring & Performance Engineer is a leading member of a quality-driven Monitoring Services Team, responsible for:

• QA and operational excellence of new product releases, focusing on monitoring;

• over-seeing best practice in the implementation of rigorous monitoring procedures covering the full product lifecycle;

• producing new and upkeep existing automated functional and non-functional monitoring scripts;

• working closely with and providing consultancy, outreach and training services to the development teams around the business and Operations;

• defining and configuring reporting system for OLAs and SLAs;

• working closely with Capacity manager to support capacity process;

• defining performance test scenarios, configure and run them and analyze results;

• provide 24x7 availability oncall shifts – 1week/month (reperibilità telefonica su turni – 1 settimana/mese).

 

Key Responsibilities:

• Create, refine, implement, document, and maintain fit for purpose Monitoring policies and processes, based on ITIL principles, for successful monitoring of software and infrastructure through a full lifecycle delivery chain.

• Ensure that Monitoring policies tie into the wider Monitoring scenario. Work to join as seamlessly as possible the development, operations and lifecycles processes.  Ensure End to end monitoring of the entire product lifecycle chain and service.

• Work with Operations and development teams to understand improvement, new feature and enhancement requirements for the monitoring development teams to implement.

• Champion Monitoring processes and tools. Ensure that Monitoring principles, processes and tools are established and adhered to. Encourage teams to use them by demonstrating best practice as well as training and information dissemination to other stakeholders. This includes giving presentations and running workshops to large groups.

• Provide a robust service for monitoring products deploying onto the platform. Utilize this service to validate all expected KPIs, events, alerts, action, documentation, and trend analysis graphs are fit for purpose for the product and infrastructure. Work with development and operations teams to ensure alert thresholds are fit for purpose and do not generate false positives or spam alerts / events.

• Participate in defining and managing quality assurance processes and procedures.

• Analyze technical architecture of systems and applications to understand dependencies, points of failure, impacts, and external and internal interfaces, to provide monitoring recommendations for system and infrastructure and time estimates.

• Define performance test strategy, scenarios build, run, and analyze the results.

• Lead war rooms for troubleshooting critical production issue.

 

Educational Qualifications & Work Experience

• Degree in Information Technology or equivalent

• + 3 years experience in the similar role in a 24x7 environment preferably within financial industry

• Fluent in English (written and spoken) B1 or higher level

 

Technical Skills:

• 1+ years administrating Nagios, CheckMK or other comprehensive monitoring solution

• 1+ years of experience in Production Operations

• 1+ years bash, Python, JS, PERL experience

• 1+ years administrating Linux and Windows Platforms

• 1+ years jmeter or equivalent experience

• 1+ years Splunk or equivalent experience

• Experience with managing and using APM tools like AppDynamics, Dynatrace or NewRelic

• Experience with using Time Series Databases like Graphite and InfluxDB

• Experience with Graphing tools like graphite and Grafana, ability to quickly create useful dashboards for the engineering and operations teams.

• Experience with managing and using ELK (ElasticSearch, Logstash, Kibana) for log aggregation and operational intelligence
