Join us for an internship experience that offers real-world project involvement within a supportive environment alongside ample opportunities for professional and personal growth. Currently, we are seeking 1 Computer Science Intern to join our program in Vicksburg, MS and Jackson, MS as a part of the collaborative Numerical Model Modernization Project between Woolpert, USACE ERDC Coastal and Hydraulics Lab and Jackson State University. This internship will be a full-time position working 40 hours a week during the summer semester (June- August). 

 

The Computer Science Intern will work alongside the Woolpert or USACE ERDC Model Modernization team to test model results in a cloud environment to find and solve software-related problems. Some projects could be testing model results, compiling and building software, and developing scripts.  All these projects directly impact the communities where we live and work.  

Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively as a member of an industry leading Model Modernization team 
• Gain real-world experience by working on actual projects alongside subject matter experts in hydrology, hydraulics and coastal (HH&C) numerical models. Anticipated Projects will include: 
• Test model(s) (ADCIRC, CSTORM, etc.) results in a cloud environment to find and solve software-related problems. Work collaboratively with the Model Modernization team to compile and build software required to run CHL models. 
• Identify software compilation tasks that can be automated and develop Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines for the rollout & testing of this software on the compute clusters   
• Build, run and optimize computational compute clusters in the cloud environment with direction from your supervisor while collaborating with the team   
• Develop scripts (Python, shell, Matlab, etc.) to facilitate modeling and data analysis efforts 
•  Design and develop cloud apps which provide new capabilities to users 
• Actively participate in daily stand-up meetings and other meetings as required   
• Perform tasks and solve problems with a high degree of independence 
• Actively participate in summer intern program activities

• Be enrolled as a student at Jackson State University, preferably with at least Junior status (Graduate students encouraged to apply) 
• Pursuing a degree in Computer Science 
• Have strong written and verbal communication skills 
• Have a good attitude 
• Have a passion for learning 
• Basic knowledge of scripting (bash, python, etc) 
• Have exceptional multitasking and time management skills
