The Janitor/Custodian, an emergency position, performs all levels of physical work including lifting, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, and scrubbing. Requiring a strong back and endurance for physical labor, additional duties include, but are not limited to:

Perform general and specific cleaning and maintenance tasks to provide a clean, safe, and pleasant physical environment.

Handle furniture moving, office cleaning, class room cleaning, restroom cleaning, exterior entrances cleaning, emergency support, supporting special event set up and break down, and cleaning all public spaces.

Have the availability and willingness to work during emergency situations such as staffing shortages and snow removal; Examples of emergency service are snow removal, inclement weather, and water damage clean up.

Perform duties using tools, equipment, and supplies of the trade.

Work Interactions

This position reports directly to the Manager of Custodial Services. The position may report to another manager or staff member as assigned by the immediate supervisor or Director of Facilities Management. Primary purpose is to provide building support services that ensure a safe, clean and comfortable environment for the University community. Employees are expected to behave in a professional manner, comply with policies and practices, be flexible with respect to scheduling and work as a part of a team.

Requirements and Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent preferred

Must be able to lift 50 lbs which requires observance of safety rules and regulations that meet state, federal, and local governing jurisdictions

May be required to drive University vehicles when necessary

Must have valid driver’s license in Virginia, Maryland, or District of Columbia and be qualified to conform to University Driving Policy

Reading, writing, and conversing in English in order to read and understand product label instructions, policies and procedures, as well as to effectively discuss custodial matters with supervisors and others

Ability to sit, walk and stand while working, and to use arms and hands to lift and carry up to fifty pounds and custodial equipment

Good attitude and customer service orientation
