Sky is one of Europe’s leading media and entertainment companies, and a part of Comcast Corporation, which also owns NBCUniversal (NBCU). We create award-winning original content, produce the biggest live sporting events and provide free access to news and the arts. 

We work on the Global Streaming Platform supporting various video on demand products such as SkyShowtime, Peacock, Showmax, and NowTV. 

 

Sky tech hub in Prague consists of around 100 people and it will be growing in the future. These are mostly developers, video-streaming enthusiasts and experts, with extensive experience across markets, technology, and products working on the Global Streaming Platform. We are collaborating closely with our colleagues in the UK, Portugal and the US. 

 

What is the plot?  

Millions of customers use our apps and we have always been looking to improve by pushing the boundaries in our products and services providing every one of our customers experiences they love. 

 

What role will you play? 

As a Medior Java Developer, you'll be part of an international team building a Content Management System that powers the content and metadata for Sky’s video streaming platforms such as Peacock, SkyShowtime, Showmax, and NowTV. You'll work in a feature team which owns several Java-based services including data ingestion pipeline, Kafka data streaming and highly scalable API’s. On a daily basis you will be implementing new features in the services. You will also contribute to enhancing the stability, observability, and performance of the system and you will participate in fixing existing issues. This role offers the opportunity to explore key aspects of our platform while collaborating closely with teams in Prague and London. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

Implement new features of the CMS application using Java and Spring 

Identify and resolve issues in the codebase. Use debugging tools and techniques to diagnose problems. 

Strive for continuous improvement – be able to improve existing practices and techniques from within the team with enthusiasm 

Assist in setting up the CI and CD, monitoring and alerting 

Write Unit and Functionally tested code for robustness including edge cases, usability and general reliability via TDD. 

Assist in the maintenance and support of the AWS infrastructure, Kubernetes deployment, Postgresql Database or Kafka 

Review code written by peers to ensure adherence to coding standards and best practices.  

Work closely with other developers, architects and analysts both in Prague and London to understand requirements and deliver solutions. 

Participate in daily standup-meetings as well as other team ceremonies to discuss progress, blockers, and plans.

What skills do you need to play your role well?  

Not experienced in some of the below areas? Most of the skills listed are not strict requirements, but they represent the key technologies and approaches we use, and we welcome candidates who are eager to learn and grow in these areas. 

 

Strong Java and Spring knowledge and experience with other technologies such as AWS, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, Kafka, Prometheus, Grafana, Kibana, Jenkins 

Ability to work well not only in your team but also in a cross-team environment.  

Hands on experience in designing, developing and successful deployment of web applications, RESTful APIs or event-driven systems and asynchronous messaging using Kafka 

Experience with automated test frameworks including considerations for non-functional requirements 

Knowledge of Unix/Linux and scripting languages (Bash, etc.) 

Being self-driven and eager to learn and stay updated with the latest technologies, frameworks, and best practices. 

Creative thinking skills and analytical skills, with attention to detail. 

Bachelor's degree in a technical field such as computer science, computer engineering or related field would be preferred. 

Fluent English.
