About the Program
The Jennie Stuart Medical Center Future Physician Intern Program is designed for local high school graduates who have completed at least one year of college on a pre-medical track and are specifically interested in pursuing a career as a physician. This program aims to provide meaningful exposure to various physician specialties within the Jennie Stuart community setting, encouraging future physicians to consider returning to their hometown to practice medicine.
Key Responsibilities
+ Clinical Rotations: Shadow physicians across multiple specialties (e.g., Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Emergency Medicine) and gain insight into daily clinical operations.
+ Patient Care Exposure: Observe patient interactions.
+ Educational Sessions: Attend departmental meetings, medical rounds, and educational workshops to deepen understanding of hospital functions and patient care workflows.
+ Project or Presentation: Engage in an optional end-of-summer presentation or project summarizing key takeaways and lessons learned during the internship for use in future personal statements.
Qualifications
+ Education:
+ Graduate of a local high school.
+ Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university with at least one year completed.
+ Majoring or minoring in a pre-medical or related scientific field.
+ Career Goal:
+ Demonstrated interest in pursuing medical school to become a physician.
+ Additional Requirements:
+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
+ A commitment to patient privacy and confidentiality (must comply with HIPAA regulations).
+ Ability to adhere to hospital policies, including dress code and professional conduct standards.
Program Structure & Flexibility
+ Duration:
+ The program runs for approximately two months, from the beginning of June through the end of July.
+ Schedule:
+ Typically Monday–Friday, with the possibility of occasional weekend or evening experiences.
+ Flexible accommodations can be made for vacations, family events, or other summer commitments.
+ Rotations:
+ Each participant will rotate through various physician specialties to gain broad exposure to different areas of medicine.
+ Rotations will be scheduled in coordination with hospital departments and physician availability.
