Department OverviewThe Melbourne Design Centre (MDC) is part of the Software Enterprise, Mobile Video and Cybersecurity Organisation. As a fully integrated R&D and Delivery site, the MDC is responsible for conceptualizing, designing, developing, and delivering mobile software and services that transform first responder operational response, coordination, and management.
Job Description

The Junior Production Engineer is responsible for collaborating with peers and software engineering teams to design, implement and maintain infrastructure solutions under the guidance and mentorship of senior engineers.

As part of this role, you will be exposed to the following areas of operations:

Designing & implementing high resiliency and availability architectures

Maintaining and improving platforms availability (SRE)

Managing on-premise deployments (VMWare)

Automated build pipeline development and management

Cybersecurity principles and applications

The successful candidate will be required to have excellent problem solving skills with a can-do mindset and be able to work collaboratively in an agile environment.

Basic Requirements

Solid communication skills

Assist in managing and maintaining various infrastructures to meet targeted SLOs

Assist software engineering teams in managing their CI/CD pipelines

Help build and maintain observability platforms and APM solutions

Assist with automation tools for infrastructure provisioning (IaC)

Help manage the automated deployment solutions

Perform automated provisioning of environments like dev and test 

Contribute to new and ongoing solutions

Assist with incident management and resolution

Maintain documentation for the various solutions

Contribute to a continuous learning culture

GENERAL EDUCATION:

Nice to have:

Tertiary level computer science or software engineering 

Recent Graduates are welcome to apply

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Understanding of Windows and Linux operating systems

Basic knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure & Google Cloud

Ability to script in languages such as BASH, PowerShell, Gradle

Good working knowledge in networking 

Experience and knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and software development lifecycle

Understanding of configuration management

Basic knowledge of infrastructure as code (IaC)

 

BONUS SKILLS:

Experience with automated deployment tools

SecOps and best practice security conventions 

Understanding of observability platforms and APM solutions such as ELK Stack, Prometheus and AppDynamics

Experience with containerisation (eg. Docker) and container orchestration such as Kubernetes

Understanding of Git and associated tools, platforms and practices

Good understanding of security practices and concepts

EXPERIENCE:

Nice to have:

+2 years working in IT, DevOps or equivalent role

Open to failure, to ask questions and grow and learn from mistakes

Ability to research, POC and learn new technologies rapidly

Creative, with the ability to generate and evaluate multiple solutions
