Lab Assistant / Phlebotomist - Rapid Response Lab -40 hrs - Night Shift

Description:Mercy Medical Center, Life Labs, Springfield, MA Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist

You would be involved with all phases of patient testing: pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical, and serves in a diverse role to assist the Laboratory Administration staff and Technologists in providing accurate testing and quality results.

What you will do:

Performs phlebotomy draws as necessary to assist in patient care.  Responsible for specimen handling and processing.

Performs assistant level testing in accordance with standard operating procedures.

Receives purchase orders in PeopleSoft.  Responsible for supply order sorting, filling and delivering as well as stocking and receiving of supplies and reagents.  Inventories supplies efficiently and effectively.

Ensures that patient results and laboratory information is available to meet the needs of the physicians, patient care providers, and laboratory management while maintaining patient confidentiality.

Correctly identifies and labels patient specimens, testing kits, reagents, and supplies.

Data entry of patient demographics, required testing, and requisitioned information into lab computer system and tracking of specimens sent to reference laboratories.

Involved in maintaining records required by regulatory agencies (OSHA, CLIA, CMS, CAP, etc.).

Performs generalized laboratory maintenance.  Properly clean and disinfect equipment, instruments, and work areas.

Participates in team-based approach to patient care that focuses on interacting with patients and helping the team achieve stated objectives.

Any other duties assigned by supervisor/manager.

Work Hours/Shift:

• 40 hours, Night Shifts, alternating weekends and rotation of holidays

           

Minimum Requirements:

High school or GED.

Technical training in Phlebotomy Program, Nat'l Phlebotomy Certification preferred

Previous experience in Lab Assistant and Phlebotomy required

Strong interpersonal skills; strong phlebotomy skills.

Adaptability and flexibility necessary for work schedule and patient care requirements. Good command of the English language and medical terminology.

Must have excellent computer knowledge and medical/lab terminology.  Knowledge of lab safety, infection control, quality policies and procedures.  Knowledge of lab Information System.  General knowledge of lab maintenance and daily operations.  General knowledge of proper lab procedures, reagent storage, and specimen handling.  Able to be alert and pay special attention to detail as aspects of job require working with potentially hazardous materials.

Organized and can learn new techniques, procedures and regulations efficiently.  Able to organize workload effectively and work quickly with high level of accuracy. 

Excellent communication skills including verbal and written and implementation of these skills in telephone and interpersonal conversations. Able to effectively document lab results and clinical notations. 

Excellent problem-solving skills to manage the day-to-day issues that may arise and notify manager of issues.  Able to use discretion and independent judgement to problem solve and make quality decisions related to clinical lab scenarios.

Able to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with providers, staff, and patients.
