Job Summary
The Lab Assistant is responsible for performing routine medical lab tests for the diagnosis and treatment of patients as directed by the clinicians and lab director. Lab assistants participate in on-call rotation and should be willing to work as needed, including overtime.

What you will do

Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adult, neonatal and pediatric patients according to established protocol. Assist in obtaining specimens from indwelling lines. Identifies and labels specimens. Assists in care of patient prior to, during, and after collection. Instruct patients in all urine collection procedures and testing requirements and obtain and process urine specimen for drug screening as a Certified Professional Collector (CPC) according to DATIA and D.O.T. standards and protocols. Assist with locating and setting up collection sites across the U.S. and occasionally assist with DOT audits. Provide breath alcohol testing services as a certified Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT) according to D.O.T. guidelines and protocols. Greet patients in a prompt, courteous and helpful manner and check-in patients and verify that all necessary information is accurate and complete. Answer telephones, maintain logs, create files, file, maintain inventories of supplies, assist in random pool management. Call all negative test results to client. Order entry in the laboratory information system. Prepares equipment to efficiently collect blood products and cleans and maintains equipment in work area. Inventories supplies for re-order, and routinely stock supplies. Provide written disposition of test results and assist the MRO with the positive result disposition. Assist with location of medical records for verified results. Attends required meetings and enhances professional growth and development through in-service meetings and education programs. Participate in education of students and new personnel.


Education Qualifications

High School Diploma and/or GED Required Technical school training in an accredited phlebotomy course or related field. Preferred Graduate of accredited phlebotomy program or related field. Preferred

Experience Qualifications

1-3 years Phlebotomoty experience. Preferred Previious exposure to Occupational Medicine. Preferred

Skills and Abilities

Excellent communication skills with internal and external customers of the lab. Communicate in a manner that promotes clinic and laboratory professionalism as well as a comfortable experience for the patient. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to work under pressure and maintain high level of accuracy. Aibility to follow detailed instructions, appropriately prioritize tasks, and hold strong problem-solving skills. Ability to become and maintain proficiency in the computer systems. Ability to learn and interpret state and federal laws and regulations and stay updated with federal regulatory changes. Knowledge of all routine container and minimum volumes required for specimen collection. Ability to answer the telephone in a pleasant, timely and helpful manner
