Lab Inspector (General Construction Inspector I)

Position Summary

Incumbents of positions in this series inspect the construction of highways, buildings, bridges, dams, water or sewage systems, tunnels and waterways for conformance with plans and specifications; conduct tests on construction materials; survey construction sites; maintain records of construction operations; and perform related work as required.

The basic purpose of this work is to oversee the construction practices used on various sites, and to enforce compliance with plans, specifications and all applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

Inspects the operation of Portland cement concrete and hot mix asphalt production facilities and the materials used.Demonstrates knowledge of inspection procedures, criteria, and material specifications.Performs tests and gradations on components used in the production of Portland cement and hot mix asphalt and on the mixes.Records all results accurately on daily plant reports.Informs the DME and plant personnel of any non-conformance with specifications.Observes and monitors the production of the materials to be used on construction projects.Keeps neat, accurate, organized, and complete records and submits in a timely fashion.Executes materials testing in the District Lab on samples of road building materials from construction projects.Performs tests on all samples received at the District Lab including; gravel, loam, bituminous concrete cores, proctor samples, etc.Demonstrated knowledge of uses of the Troxler Nuclear Density gauges (thin lift and soils) to determine densities on construction projects after obtaining Proctor figure.Collects samples of source-controlled products and field samples of materials from construction projects to be tested at the District Lab and Boston RM.Assists in logging inspection assignments.Prepares samples and checks documentation for shipment to Boston RM.

This position is eligible for a five thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired to the Unit E collective bargaining unit at MassDOT. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee’s first paycheck. 2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period. Only candidates external to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation are eligible for the sign-on bonus.
