Lab Manager
The Lab Manager will manage the laboratory department regarding activities such as testing soils, concrete, aggregate and similar types of products.  The position will communicate daily with the Professional Engineer in charge, Project Managers and Field Technicians and supervise and train all lab technicians. ResponsibilitiesComplete lab testing and maintain daily communication/provide supervision to lab techniciansMentor and develop lab technicians with testing and knowledge base while assisting with career development and advancementAssist with training new hires to prepare them for certification testsParticipate in business development, networking and marketingAssist with the budget and proposals for lab activitiesComplete detailed lab reports and documentation  Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for the labMaintain the lab quality standardsMaintain the accreditations of the laboratory to ensure continued compliance with ASTM E-329, etc.Responsible for approving staff time off, weekly timesheets and employee expense reportsKeep all required certifications activeOther duties as assignedQualificationsRequired: High school diploma Preferred: Bachelor’s degree from accredited college/university with a focus in sciences or civil engineeringPreferred Certifications: WACEL/ACI Laboratory (Aggregate Laboratory Technician, Concrete Strength Testing Technician (Includes ASTM C78), Soils Laboratory Technician), ACI (Concrete Strength Testing Technician, Aggregate Base Testing Technician, Aggregate Testing Technician), APNGA (American Portable Nuclear Gauge Association) Radiation Safety CertificationPreferred additional certifications: Additional as needed for adding testing services.Preferred: 3+ years of field experience Ability to calculate results from construction materials testing dataAbility to read and interpret construction documentsAbility to accurately complete field testing paperwork and detailed figuresAbility to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memosAbility to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general publicAbility to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusionsAbility to read, analyze and interpret general business memos and proposalsAbility to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manualsKnowledge of Laboratory software as neededWorking Conditions & Physical RequirementsThis position is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments.You will be in an office and/or lab environment with some weekend and overtime work and/or overnight work and travel may be required.   You will be involved primarily with field testing in the lab that may involve long term standing and perhaps repetitive motions. Ability to use your senses to see (including close, distant and peripheral vision, depth vision and ability to focus), smell, hear and touch (use your hands to reach, climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit).  It is common to have loud vibrations, metal to metal ringing noises, masonry hammers running and compressors.  This employee will regularly lift and/or move/shake up to 20 pounds (soil and/or concrete tests and related apparatus); frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds (soils and sand samples, and nuclear density equipment); and occasionally move more than 80 pounds (such as a loaded wheelbarrow of concrete samples).  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.UES is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
