Lab Manager-DAY SHIFT

Primary Purpose: Responsible for coordination of development and company objectives of Laboratory procedures. A technical leader with expertise in ICP operation, GC interpretation and\/or PCB quantification. Possesses advanced knowledge and familiarity in laboratory instrumentation (troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair), regulatory and waste fuel blending criteria, OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations, with the ability to teach and perform multiple laboratory tests, to provide reliable analytical services to operations and our customers, in a timely manner. This position is responsible for managing lab personnel, ensure communication from the Lab to other departments, manage the development and implementation of lab procedures, ensure the training of all lab personnel, maintain safety standards, quality control, and develop SOP's.\n

Essential Functions and Requirements:\n\nEnsures Health & Safety is the number one goal by following policies, processes, and acting in a safe manner at all times.\nProvide leadership to ensure laboratory and company objectives are achieved.\n\n\nOversight of operation and function of Laboratory Services in the format of Fuel Laboratory.\nFormulation and implementation of laboratory budget. Purchasing and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation.\nManagement of Laboratory Personnel\nProvides leadership to ensure laboratory and company objectives are achieved.\nEnsure compliance with all stated policies and practices.\nInformed and practiced with regards to safety procedures, waste analysis and quality assurance plans. Responsible for daily assessments and any corrective actions.\nPossesses advanced knowledge and familiarity concerning all duties for all laboratory positions under his\/her direction. Tests include, but are not limited to the following:\n\nDetermination of acidity and alkalinity; pH; screening for oxidizers, peroxides, cyanides and sulfides. paint filter liquids; fuel and water compatibilities; solids percentage; heat of combustion (BTU value); total halogens; water analysis by Karl Fischer; viscosity; density; flashpoint.\nAdditionally, reactive sulfides; acid treatment for PCB screening; PCB identification & quantification; GC-ECD operations; metals digestion; metals by ICP; Hg analysis, and TOC.\nPlus operation of Leeman ICPs Prodigy & Profile; Hg by AA, COD and BOD. \n\n\n\n\nMonitor performance and requirements of approved methods to accomplish project and quality assurance\/quality control objectives. Provide timely and accurate recommendations in relation to the training of lab personnel and modification of methods.\nReport daily to the Plant Manager on personnel, equipment, production and quality issues.\nResponsible for the overall quality performance of the laboratory, including but not limited to production quotas, quality issues including audits, and laboratory appearance including client and internal tours.\nOngoing evaluation along with organized and detailed recommendations on procedures, equipment modifications, and quality functions in general.\nCommunicate with production, profile and sales personnel, as required.\nResponsible for overseeing recommendations regarding personnel changes including promotions and terminations.\nResponsible for supporting lab superintendent with overall performance of the lab shift, including but not limited to production quotas, budget requirements, continuous coverage of all positions, overall stability, teamwork with internal clients, quality issues including audits, and laboratory appearance including client and internal tours.\nOngoing evaluation along with organized and detailed recommendations on procedures, equipment modifications, and quality functions in general.\n\n

Education: Bachelor's degree in chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related science required. Advanced degree or formal training in Quality, Hazardous Waste, or Chemistry preferred.\n

Experience: Minimum of 5 years lab management experience required. Experience in a hazardous waste, environmental, or related field preferred. \n

Knowledge and Abilities: Working knowledge of one or more areas of analytical chemistry (preferably PCB's, volatiles, and metals). Working knowledge of instrument troubleshooting, and maintenance with regards all analyses performed by the lab. Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in all areas of the lab. Must have basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft programs. A working knowledge of basic LIMS. Excellent time management with multi-tasking skills and experience. Requires a detailed understanding of regulatory requirements and a general familiarity of industry trends. Requires a level of chemical knowledge that includes the characteristics, reactions, and hazards of substances encountered in the hazardous waste industry. Effective communication skills with the ability communicate in a timely manner the specifics of questionable or hazardous material to the proper authorities, and respond to incidents in a timely manner, as well as train and inform others who may be exposed.\n
