Lab & Research Technician 1

The Department of Pathology at the University of Virginia’s (UVA) School of Medicine, is currently seeking applicants for a Biorepository technician.

The person in this position will support human biospecimen procurement, database management, and specimen shipment in support of a National Cancer Institute grant for the Cooperative Human Tissue Network, a multi-institutional biospecimen consortium. Duties will include working with UVA Medical Center staff in the procurement of human tissue and biofluid specimens, coordination with the CHTN and UVA Biorepository staff in filling requests from investigators across the country, managing processing fees, packaging biospecimen shipments on accordance with all shipping regulations and arranging shipment pickups with couriers and data entry into biorepository databases.

Job Responsibilities

Perform similar duties to Lab and Research Aide, such as collecting specimens, setting up and performing experiments of a repetitive nature; and preparing culture media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions as instructed.

At direction of Principal Investigator or senior staff, perform biological, hematological, chemical, or physical analysis.

Participate in research or clinical work involving treatment operations and experiments with animals to include care and feeding, cage cleaning and sanitization, and observation during post-operative or treatment periods.

May perform some surgical procedures on small lab animals.

Prepare support materials, compare and assist with analyses of data and write reports. Assist with literature reviews.

Operate, adjust, and maintain specific scientific apparatuses and instruments. Order lab supplies and maintain inventory.

Record accurate information and logs of experimental data.

Keep informed of new lab techniques.

Provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.

May contact and coordinate schedules with study subjects, handle information intake, and record and track results. May provide logistical support to the study.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
