The Mayo Lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a Research Technician to join our team and assist on projects examining the cellular processes involved in lung cancer metastasis.
The Research Technician will work directly with Dr. Mayo and other lab personnel to perform research tasks, and provide routine to moderately complex technical support for research projects. The position will also provide ample opportunities to gain hands-on experience with a variety of advanced biochemical, molecular, and cutting-edge genetic approaches. This position is perfect for graduating seniors or students who have recently graduated that are interested in obtaining significant research experience in preparation for graduate school and/or medical school.
Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
Organizing, keeping inventory of, and ordering laboratory supplies and reagents.
Performing general laboratory maintenance including cleaning of common laboratory space, performing maintenance on standard laboratory equipment, and preparing stock buffers and solutions.
Performing and analyzing a variety of routine biochemistry and molecular biology experiments using established protocols and procedures under the guidance of Dr. Mayo.
Thoroughly documenting all research related activities and maintaining an organized laboratory notebook.
Participating in laboratory meetings.
Providing routine technical and administrative support to laboratory research projects.
In addition to the listed responsibilities, other responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Lab and Research Technician 1
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.
Licensure: None
Lab and Research Technician 2
Education: Associate's degree
Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.
Licensure: None.
Preferred Skills:
A working knowledge of standard Microsoft Office software (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
A basic knowledge of fundamental biochemistry and molecular biology.
Good communication and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Ability to adapt to a challenging and fast-paced laboratory environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
