The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine seeks applications for Lab Specialist Senior in the Center for Advanced Vision Science. The Lab Specialist Senior will report to Jayakrishna Ambati, M.D.
The Lab Specialist Senior will be responsible for performing the complex lab and research related tasks our Center requires to maintain its business processes, especially with the expanding portfolio of our research enterprise. The Lab Specialist Senior will work as a lab manager overseeing writing animal welfare protocols, regulatory compliance, assisting and overseeing postdocs and lab staff with daily operations, and first line management of lab business needs.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Assist Principal Investigators in coordinating research projects, performing experimental procedures, collecting data, and preparing biological specimens.Oversee the management of the animal colony, including breeding, husbandry, genotyping, and regulatory compliance; coordinate with veterinary staff and research teams to meet research and animal welfare requirements.Manage and train 1-3 support staff in daily operations and general lab maintenance.Supervise the day-to-day operations of research projects, including scheduling, equipment maintenance, and record-keeping.Oversee specialized labs or research areas, and may conduct fieldwork and data analysis.Train users on equipment and research techniques, and handle minor equipment repairs.Participate in the planning and execution of research projects, discuss results with Principal Investigators, and contribute to the preparation of scientific publications.Supervise and train new staff, manage on/off boarding procedures, and may handle budgeting and financial processes related to the lab.Minimum Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: 6 years of experience. 10 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree or Master's degree plus 4 years lab-related experience.
Physical Demands:
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation
