Job Description:
Performs waived and moderate complexity testing according to CLIA ‘88 guidelines in one or all of the following fields in the Clinical Laboratory which includes Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation and Microbiology. Works independently but under the supervision of the department supervisor or a Medical Technologist. May perform QC and QA as assigned by the supervisor after competency is demonstrated. Duties also include certain clerical tasks and related laboratory services.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
The following is a summary of the major functions of this individual's job:
Collects suitable specimens for the assigned test and delivers to the laboratory promptly with proper patient identification and labeling.
Maintains documentation in accordance with guidelines established by regulatory agencies and according to laboratory policy.
Performs testing and records test results correctly either manually or in the computer system.
Performs all automated and manual test procedures according to the procedure manual.
Reports results within established turn-around-times.
Demonstrates the ability to perform preventative maintenance and start-up procedures for instruments in the laboratory.
Annually completes competency validation, mandatory safety programs and OSHA requirements.
Maintains good rapport with co-workers, nurses, physicians, patients and their families.
Demonstrates understanding of all policies and procedures or asks appropriate questions.
Effectively utilizes knowledge.
Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required:
A. Master, Bachelor or Associate Degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science/ medical laboratory technology/ medical technology, or
B. High school graduate or equivalent and completed an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician), or
C. High school graduate or equivalent and have documentation of training appropriate for the testing performed prior to analyzing patient specimens. Work experience and satisfaction of CLIA ‘88 requirements to perform moderate complexity testing
