Statewide travel required. Opening Date: February 13, 2025Closing Date: March 3, 2025 The Wage and Hour Division is responsible for ensuring that Maine workers are paid fairly and timely, and that working minors are safe on the job. The Division takes multiple approaches to increasing compliance with labor laws, from education of employers and workers to investigation of worksites and records. Labor and Safety Inspectors form a small team comprised of dedicated and self-motivated individuals who can make a difference in Maine’s workplaces. Compliance with labor laws not only ensures that workers are paid fairly and timely, but also that businesses compete on a level playing field. Primary responsibilities include: + Audits and inspects employers' payroll records and worksites for compliance with applicable federal and state labor laws, rules, and regulations. + Inspects work site equipment to determine compliance with child labor safety standards. + Interviews employers and employees to gather information regarding labor practices and complaints. + Writes reports of inspections and investigations to document findings and other required information. + Recommends citations and orders for violations of labor laws. + Conducts consultations and training programs to explain laws and standards. + Reviews practices and recommends appropriate changes or improvements to equipment and operational procedures. + Develops and implements caseload management strategies to manage assigned cases. + Testifies as an expert witness in court to assist in the prosecution of labor law violations. Skills or knowledge required: + Knowledge of the state and federal laws, rules, and regulations related to employment, including the State Minimum Wage and Payment of Wage laws. + Knowledge of employment and business practices and record-keeping requirements. + Knowledge of labor law compliance enforcement procedures and laws. + Knowledge of investigative methods and techniques. + Knowledge of employment conditions, hazards of various industries and businesses, and the correct use and dangerous features of the machines, tools, equipment, and processes about employment of minors. + Ability to interpret and apply labor and child labor safety laws. + Ability to ascertain facts, reach logical conclusions, and make sound recommendations. + Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. + Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. + Ability to write reports of investigations and inspections. + Ability to perform mathematical computations. Minimum qualifications: A combination of education, training, and/or experience in Business/Public Administration, one of the Social Sciences, or a related area AND demonstrated experience involving extensive public contact, public speaking, complaint investigation/resolution, mediation, or a directly related area.
