Laboratory and Research Technician 1

The Petri Lab is currently seeking a lab and research technician to join our team in studying host response to C. difficile infections. We work on C. difficile, Entamoeba histolytica, Cryptosporidium as well as SARS-COV2 virus. This position will be supporting the C. difficile related research and mainly involve routine research tasks and mice colony maintenance. The work will involve working with mice, mice-derived samples (such as stools and tissues), cell line, bacteria, and microbial-derived compounds using a wide array of techniques depending on research need. An ideal applicant will have good background on biology, sense of responsibility, organization skills, motivated to learn new techniques, and works well in a team environment. Work is routine and can be performed with some degree of independence when following established protocols and procedures. Lab and Research Technician 1 employees perform tasks as assigned by supervisor.

The successful candidate will:

Manage mice colonies, such as taking record of the number of mice for each strain, weaning, genotyping, and maintaining breeding pairs.

Participate in animal experiments, including treatment, providing care and observation during post-operative or treatment/infection periods.

May perform some surgical procedures on mice.

Perform similar duties to Lab and Research Aide, such as collecting specimens, setting up and performing experiments of a repetitive nature; and preparing culture media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions as instructed.

At direction of Principal Investigator or senior staff, perform biological, histological, or chemical analysis.

Prepare support materials, compare and assist with analyses of data and write reports. Assist with literature reviews.

Operate, adjust, and maintain specific scientific apparatuses and instruments. Order lab supplies and maintain inventory.

Record accurate information and logs of experimental data.

Keep informed of new lab techniques.

Provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.

May contact and coordinate schedules with study subjects, handle information intake, and record and track results. May provide logistical support to the study.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in biology or related field will be considered in lieu of experience.

Licensure: None

PREFERENCES  

Good knowledge of basic molecular biology and neuroscience.

Experience in mice colony maintenance.

Skills working with mice (such as basic handling, injections, and gavage)

Familiar with fundamental molecular biology techniques such as PCR and western blotting

Skills in immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence staining

Proficiency with the Microsoft office suite (excel, word, PowerPoint) and computers in general

Rigorous attention to detail, excellent organization and record keeping skills

Ability to learn and employ new software for record keeping and database management.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
