Laboratory Assistant
Element Materials Technology
**Overview**
Element Iowa City is currently looking to hire a **Laboratory Assistant** to join our growing team. Under general supervision, the **Laboratory Assistant** provides laboratory testing support to production staff, molecular scientists, and managers. The position will consist of routine work such as general housekeeping, testing preparation, operation of laboratory equipment, and routine maintenance. Special tasks will be assigned by managers or production staff/molecular scientists on a daily basis.
**Responsibilities**
+ Process incoming specimens using proper safety handling guidelines, labeling of plates, using appropriate media, and properly streaking for isolation
+ Assist with media and reagent preparation
+ Dispense and cap media and other reagents using aseptic technique
+ Label and fill panels using automation
+ Properly pull isolates from the bank for SENTRY and protocol testing.
+ Extract DNA from bacteria, yeasts, and molds
+ Assist with PCR or NGS testing setup
+ Clean laboratory surfaces/spaces
+ Calibrate, conduct routine maintenance, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation
+ Seek technical direction from the Production Staff/Molecular Scientists with specific instrumentation problems
+ Carry out recommended corrective action for quality assurance
+ Comply with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements of the laboratory.
+ Comply with the Quality Assurance program within the laboratory
+ Document and report variances to the Laboratory Managers
+ Identify opportunities for improvement and make recommendations to the Laboratory
+ Work with Managers for resolution of identified problems/errors
+ Assist with writing and revising laboratory procedures according to CLSI and regulatory guidelines
**Skills / Qualifications**
+ Associate’s Degree in a laboratory science field from an accredited college or university or anequivalent combination of education and experience is required
