Position Summary:
The Research Biotechnology group uses synthetic biology to build thousands of strains per year and evaluates those strains in hundreds of fermentation batches. We are recruiting an experienced laboratory data specialist to design and administer the data infrastructure for this rich data resource. The successful candidate will need to have strong technical foundations in laboratory automation and data engineering, along with excellent communication skills. This team member will collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) in strain construction, automation, biochemistry, bioinformatics, and all scales of fermentation to define user requirements and will work to deliver solutions with the support of ADM IT and 3rd party software providers.

Because this data forms the foundation for advanced analytics and data science, this is an important role in ADM Biotechnology. Data engineers with experience in designing systems for the management of laboratory data are encouraged to apply.

Job Responsibilities:Serve as a champion for technical solutions to laboratory information storageDesign and implement continuous improvements to the existing LIMSAssess user requirements and lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of data modelsOptimize the interface between LIMS and the physical lab space – labeling, barcoding, inventory managementBuild and maintain dashboards and app integrations using the Benchling Warehouse and API/SDKPerform standard administrative and maintenance dutiesManage online data capture from laboratory instruments using Aveva PI process historianWork with internal developers and Research IT to set up and maintain instrument connectionsCurate PI Asset Framework elements and analyses for Biotechnology groupManage local account permissions and training of lab personnelCreate, maintain, and manage training for new users or new featuresDocument the use of software and new features for team membersOrganize regular trainings to educate team members on the use of softwareEstablish and follow good software development practices including iterative application development, managing user requirements, unit testing, version control and software repository managementContribute to scientific programming efforts by developing and maintaining computing infrastructure tools (e.g. JupyterHub, Git, database integrations).Job Requirements:
These skills and experiences will be required or useful for the candidate:Bachelor’s degree with relevant experience or Master’s degree in related fieldExperience in LIMS administration and configurationFamiliarity with configuration of common process historian (e.g., Aveva PI) and communication protocols (OPC, Modbus)Experience in scientific computing and statistical data analysis is a plusFamiliarity with synthetic biology and/or bioprocessing is a plusDemonstrated success working within inter-disciplinary teamsExcellent written and oral communication skills with both technical and non-technical personnelExperience with the following software tools is a plus: Python, Jupyter Notebooks, R, JMP, Aveva PI, Nextflow, Shell scripting, git, SQL, JSON, REST, API programming, Benchling, IDBS, Cloud Computing systems like Microsoft AzureExcited about this role but don’t meet every requirement listed?
