POSITION SUMMARY
Performs and maintains preventative maintenance, repair, analysis, design, modification, installation and evaluation of sophisticated and complex instrumentation used in the clinical laboratory. Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards.  

CORE FUNCTIONS
1.  Repairs, as needed, all instruments and analyzers in the clinical laboratory by doing an analysis for any modifications and/or installation of more sophisticated equipment following College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Joint Commission ACHO guidelines for equipment repairs.  

2.  Performs all preventive maintenance and electrical safety for all types of lab equipment at the Papago Facility and satellite locations according to service schedule. 

3.  Maintains records of work performed with any maintenance completed, work orders submitted and completed, including time and materials expended using the biomedical department database. 

4.  Organizes and maintains inventory of required spare parts to maintain operational efficiency of instruments and reduce instrument downtime by reviewing failure rate data. Takes responsibility of test equipment and tools furnished by SQL / LSA and logs and tags new equipment in database and performs electrical safety for internal and external safety inspections. 

5.  Continues to increase knowledge and skills relative to new instrumentation and preventative concepts by attending engineering classes. Provides ongoing training classes for maintenance and repairs to equipment for equipment operators and biomedical staff with less expertise. 

6.  Responsible for providing guidance to the Laboratory Equipment Specialist I employees in absence of department manager, manages the workflow, job assignments, job orders and scheduling of the department’s activities. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENT FACTORS

Requires reading, writing, verbal communication skills, stooping, bending, reaching, kneeling and standing for long periods. Mechanical aptitude, ability to lift up to 75 pounds and work under stress of deadlines. Ability to work varied hours when needed. Work is performed in an (OSHA 1) work environment. Ability to travel out of state for up to 4 weeks at a time.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.   

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Associates Degree in Biomedical Engineering or related field.  Six (6) years of clinical lab instrumentation maintenance experience. OR completion of a Biomed Military training program and six (6) years’ progressively more responsible work experience in all phases of clinical laboratory instrumentation.   Proficient at reading and analyzing schematic diagrams, including analog and digital circuits.Working knowledge of electrical and electronic fundamentals, mechanical and pneumatics theory, digital circuit theory and microprocessor theory.Proficient in Windows PC and network operating systems, PC repair. Working with Laptops.Fundamental knowledge in Local Area Network configuration and troubleshooting.Knowledgeable of Joint Commission and College of American Pathologists (CAP) standards for Environment of Care.May be required to travel on a regular basis between various facilities and cities.Valid State Drivers’ License.  

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Certification as a clinical laboratory equipment specialist (CLES) or CBMET.   Additional related education and/or experience.
