*The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is currently seeking a Cancer Biology Laboratory Research Specialist for the Department of Pharmacology.*Under direct supervision, the selected candidate will work on NIH and ofther funded projects related to pancreatic cancer metastasis. The goal of the laboratory is to gain a deeper understanding of mechanistic adaptations unique to metastatic pancreatic cancer cells. All employees are expected to work primarily physically within the State of Maryland.* *PRIMARY DUTIES* * Independently organize schedule, administer day-to-day laboratory operations including monitoring the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies. Maintain proper operation of research equipment, ensuring proper operation records, cleaning, inventory and ordering of required components and resolving technical issues. * Perform day to day laboratory research activities as assigned by Supervisor such as: generation of lab reagents and cell lines; general housekeeping, animal surgeries and injections; daily observations of animal health; collection of cultures and biological specimens for diagnostic testing and monitoring of animal health; bacteriological, or biological assays; breeding colonization processes; electrophoresis, blotting, chromatography, PCR and DNA extractions; histopathological processing and immunofluorescence of human and mouse tissues etc. * Perform independent project(s) and participate in the design of research studies. in reviewing documents pertinent to laboratory’s involvement and providing feedback on laboratory related activities. Provide feedback on the development of protocols and manual of procedures. Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications. Author and review standard operating procedures (SOPs) and research study documents. * Assist in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustration and graphics for publication. * Perform daily duties such as assisting in the training of undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral, international fellows, and/or junior technical personnel in the performance of general laboratory maintenance and a variety of laboratory techniques. * Develop and produce reports of study data for project staff and stakeholders. * Compile and analyze research data using various relevant computer software applications to draw conclusions and make recommendations * Perform other related duties as assigned. *MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS* *Education:*Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory. *Experience:*Three (3) years of experience including two (2) years in the relevant research specialization. *Other:*May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted. ** *KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITIES* Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both oral and written communications. Ability to understand and apply approved guidelines of varying research protocols. Knowledge of best practice in research protocols and procedures. Ability to use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgements.
