GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Department of Agriculture, Analytical Services Laboratory is searching for a Laboratory Scientist II with a background in water chemistry. This water chemistry position will perform a variety of analyses of water samples using standard methods in an ISO/IEC 17025 and EPA-accredited laboratory. This position is also cross-trained into the microbiology department to do microbiological tests on water samples. This position will also be designated as the laboratory safety officer.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which

+ Performs routine analyses of samples and non-routine analytical chemistry work on a variety of samples through specialized training.
+ Operates highly complex laboratory analyzers and performs manual tests following detailed instructions, using safe, good laboratory practice.
+ Follows standard analytical procedures while handling hazardous or infectious materials.
+ Develops, maintains, and revises laboratory documents or policies.
+ Develops new or revised test methods, standard operation procedures, and laboratory policies.
+ Works independently under minimal supervision.
+ Responds to requests for information from the public and departmental personnel.
+ Acts as a leader in the water chemistry laboratory by helping staff prioritize samples, troubleshooting equipment and methods, managing supply inventory, and training staff.
Qualifications
PREFERENCES:
Preference may be given to the applicant with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely related field with at least 2 years of experience working in a laboratory environment.
KNOWLEDGE:
+ Knowledge of basic chemistry principles and theories.
+ Knowledge of laboratory research principles and recording of daily work activities.
+ Knowledge of highly technical analyzers such as titration, ion chromatography, ICP-MS, UHPLC, GC-MS, ICP-OES, or LC-MS.
+ Knowledge of laboratory quality control assurance practices, ISO accreditation, safety,y, and hazardous material control.
+ Knowledge of EPA Safe Drinking Water Standards.
+ Knowledge and ability to think critically and accurately to process complex data.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Science)
Experience:
0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Laboratory Scientist I
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Laboratory Scientist I

Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
+ Works closely with hazardous chemicals and substances.
+ Must be able to stand for long periods.
+ Works with environmental samples.
+ Some tasks may be repetitive.
+ Occasional exposure to loud noises.
