Laboratory Section Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Team Leader in her/his specialty will assess, plan and implement care for our patients. Guide day-to-day supervision of laboratory personnel; collaborate with Physicians, Director, Laboratory Team Leaders, health care professionals, and demonstrate professional growth and development. She/he will consistently demonstrate expert proficiency in working with patients according to their scope of practice and will serve as a unit resource and teacher. The Team Leader will serve as an assistant to the Director, mentoring and supporting newer staff and facilitating communication, training, assisting in the advancement of their clinical practice and organizational initiatives. He/she will serve as a role model for expert, contemporary, evidence-based practices, and participate in the on-going growth and maintenance of the excellent customer services provided to all that ECHN serves. Assist the Director in maximizing the department’s financial resources.

Demonstrates constant awareness of infection control standards, acute awareness of patient care protocols.  Assumes responsibility for designated areas or procedures as required. The incumbent demonstrates leadership skills and is accountable for the quality of patient care, the performance of laboratory growth, and the orientation, education, and development of the staff.  Assists with scheduling and provides input into review evaluations. 

The Team Leader will be responsible for representing ECHN to the laboratory patient in both the outpatient and inpatient setting. 

Participates in the operational duties of the department, such as but not limited to, quality improvement, and policy and procedure maintenance. He/She must be able to effectively and efficiently manage multiple priorities and tasks and work in a high-volume environment.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

Minimum of five years of related work experience. Bachelor’s degree in medical technology preferred or achieved within two (2) years. Certification as Medical Technologist through American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent.  Must provide education transcript prior to start of employment. If completing bachelor’s degree within two years, transcript must be submitted at time of hire and after each completed semester and upon completion of degree.

EXPERIENCE:

Must have at least five (5) years or more of progressive experience.

COMPETENCIES:

Must be proficient in cardiac monitoring, administration of conscious sedation and be IV competent. Must have strong verbal and written English communication skills in order to interface with staff and instruct patients. Intermediate ability to use Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. A demonstrated ability to lead others and take on additional job responsibilities to ensure the department functions well under their direction and must be able to work well with referring physicians, other departments, and staff. The incumbent must meet the ECHN age specific knowledge/skill requirement and complete all ECHN assigned training and development in the time frames prescribed by the organization. Must have a valid driver license for travel between ECHN sites.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ensures adequate supplies and regents to efficiently operate the department. Maintains a complete procedure manual, standardized for all sites.  Documenting yearly review by staff and pathologists. Monitors workflow of staff within department to ensure that all work is completed according to established TAT policies. Maintains the operating budget within the established parameters for the area of responsibility. Oversees instrument maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting, and ensures all section equipment performs to established manufacturer and laboratory specifications. Recommends new test methodology to provide for state-of-the-art patient care, while increasing laboratory revenue. Ensures technical expertise within area of responsibility.  Reviews available lab management reports to track data amends, called results, test turnaround time, and accuracy. Provides Technical support for respective area of responsibility. Completes annual competency testing of all staff assigned to area of responsibility.  Retraining staff is necessary. Orients and trains new employees following established checklists. Monitors Quality Control results.  Take corrective action as necessary. Ensures all assays have the appropriate proficiency testing material.  Ensures the completion of all proficiency testing.  Includes all staff in the performance of proficiency testing. Ensures that all accreditations’ standards (CAP, CLIA, State, JACHO) are accurately implemented. Appropriately delegates duties and tasks to team members, developing opportunities to promote growth of peers. Manages the day-to-day operations of the department consulting with the Director as necessary trouble shooting. Coordinates and implements orientation of all staff.    Collaborates with Director to address orientee concerns/problems. Ensures accurate completion of orientation paperwork. Uses a comprehensive approach, a high level of discriminative judgment, advanced knowledge, and expert skill to identify problems and issues that interfere with patient care and that may require intervention. Prepare staff schedules in accordance with the department policies, is mindful of department volumes. Responsible for holding laboratory staff meetings. Acts as an expert resource that provides pertinent information which enables lab and support staff and others to make decisions based on a wide range of relevant and appropriate alternatives. Supports the Clinical team in their ability to care for a patient population. Utilizes evidence-based practice in clinical procedures, administrative policies and educational materials for patients, staff and others. Collaborates with Human Resources and other stakeholders in performing an annual review of annual mandatory education. Consistently considers long term plan and proactively stays abreast of technology as needed for the department as evidenced by accurate guidance in the introduction of new procedures and equipment purchases.
