This vacancy is located in the Medical Services Clinic of Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System in Jackson, LA. ELMHS is the largest 24-hour, multi-site, state psychiatric complex, comprised of residential, outpatient and inpatient services.

Some job duties include, but are not limited to:
Responsible for all aspects of the management of the laboratory and supplies ready by inventorying stock, placing orders, verifying receipt. Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance. Documents information by maintaining daily logs and equipment record books. Resolves problems by examining and evaluating data, selecting corrective steps. Completes projects by assisting project team, attending and participating in group and project meetings. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading technical publications. Enhances laboratory and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
Some tasks associated with this position include, but are not limited to:
Draw labs with 2 Identifiers
Leave lab requisition on building of patient drawn and refuse labs
Centrifuge lab specimen
Verify specimen with lab order sheet
File requisition copy for lab result return check-off
Check results for alert and critical labs, call and report to values to unit nurse
Write alert values in alert book, person who received the critical lab call, fill out critical/stat sheet with appropriate time and call to information
Take all lab result to proper doctor and building to be signed off by nurse or doctor that results were received

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of general laboratory experience; OR
Completion of an accredited clinical laboratory or medical laboratory technology program; OR
An associate or bachelor’s degree in medical technology, nursing, clinical laboratory science, or a biological, physical, or chemical science; OR
Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician or Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every six semester hours earned from an accredited college or university in any of the biological, physical, chemical, or agricultural sciences will substitute for one year of experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Positions in Human Testing Laboratory environments must be licensed to practice as either a Laboratory Assistant or a Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Technician in the State of Louisiana as required by Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Personnel Law R.S. 37:1311-1329 and the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.

Differs from Laboratory Technician 2 and Laboratory Technical Assistants by the preparation of laboratory specimens to be evaluated by higher level laboratory personnel.

EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.
Performs veni-puncture in keeping with standard protocol on patients to obtain blood for requested analysis.
Interviews, screens, and performs sterile veni-puncture in keeping with standard protocol to obtain 500 ML whole blood for use in the blood bank.
Prepares laboratory specimens such as blood, urine, stool, and sputum for diagnostic evaluation.
Prepares feces and other materials for examination for the presence of ova and parasites.
Prepares, embeds, cuts, stains, mounts, labels, and catalogues tissue sections.
Prepares, stains cover slips, and catalogues cytology specimens.
Prepares reagents, soils, and plant and animal tissues for analysis to identify pH, lime, organic matter, minor elements, soluble salts, etc.
Operates pH meters, salt bridges, balances and colorimeters, calibrating as necessary.
Performs microscopic examination, records, and reports test results.
