Laboratory Technician 3 - Research Technical Support

The Laboratory Technician 3 - Research Technical Support shall provide support in using animal models and in vitro models to evaluate vaccines performing immunogenicity studies such as cellular/humoral immune responses using ELISA, flow cytometry and other immunological techniques, as well as basic virology studies. Will also provide protective efficacy studies support using animal models with infectious agents of the DoD interest. In this role, the Laboratory Technician 3 - Research Technical Support will support work done in BSL-3 and BSL-4 and BPRP as well as conduct in vitro assays to evaluate viral replication in the context vaccines and other medical countermeasure development. The Laboratory Technician 3 - Research Technical Support will work in BSL-2, BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories therefore they must hold and maintain BPRP status, IAW the provisions of this contract and applicable regulations. The Laboratory Technician 3 - Research Technical Support will work with controlled substances and therefore must hold and maintain CS-PRP status, IAW the provisions of this contract and applicable regulations. These areas will be developed within the Virology division and through collaborations both within and outside of USAMRIID to further the vaccine immunology and viral therapeutic portfolio of the Institute. Perform basic cell culture and basic virology assays such as plaque assays (PA), plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT), PCR, qRT-PCR, DNA preparations and purification, cloning, transformations, fluorescence in-situ Hybridization (FISH), flow cytometry, Western blot, IFAs, high content imaging, plaque assays, PRNTs, virus propagation and purification and other assays to support ongoing projects. Perform cryopreservation and thawing of cell lines. Prepare and participate in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 laboratory inspections conducted by Safety, Bio-surety, CDC, and/or the Department of Army Inspector General at a minimum of 2 times a year. Perform in vitro testing of candidate vaccines, therapeutics, and examination of pathogenesis involving a variety of viruses using cell culture, to include microphysiological systems. Perform in vitro assays to evaluate viral vaccines for immunogenicity by measuring cellular/humoral immune responses using ELISA, flow cytometry and other immunological techniques. Support small animal studies in biosafety levels 2, 3, and 4 laboratories, including the administration of anesthesia, vaccine inoculations, virus challenges, therapeutic treatments, health monitoring and documentation, necropsies and tissue collections, and blood and tissue processing. In vivo small animal studies range from up to ten (10) studies per year. Responsible for assessing and maintaining laboratory supplies in BSL-2, BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories. Will assess supplies and ensure supplies are ordered or will order supplies using GFEBS or DMLSS ordering system. Protocols and data generated will be presented at weekly meetings as applicable. CONUS/OCONUS travel may be required in support of approved studies and/or presentation of scientific research. Will assist with annual conduct of Equipment Inventory Management in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4. Responsible for the management, safeguard, and storage of BSAT, animal tissue samples, and working stock samples. Other duties as assigned Qualifications The position requires a bachelor’s degree in biology or related sciences with a minimum of 2 years of in vivo and in vitro laboratory experience. US citizenship is required. CS-PRP enrollment is required and will be held and maintained IAW the provisions in this contract and all applicable regulations. BPRP enrollment is required and will be held and maintained IAW the provisions in this contract and all applicable regulations. Estimated Salary/Wage USD $60,000.00/Yr. Up to USD $70,000.00/Yr.
