Laboratory Test Engineer

 

Job Description & Skill Requirements:

 

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or master’s degree in science. Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field. 4+ years of experience in diesel engine calibration and testing. Expertise in data analysis and calibration tools. Experience working with engine control systems and emissions testing.

 

Must Have:

Experience with Matlab and Simulink environment, including HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) and MIL (Model-in-the-Loop) simulations. Experience working with real-time simulation hardware, with a preference for experience with Opal-RT. Experience with hardware design, prototyping, and design validation. Experience with simulation tools like SPICE or Saber. Hands-on experience in a lab environment with high voltages, oscilloscopes, and lab tools. Strong understanding of induction motor characteristics and control methods. Strong understanding of mechanical systems and the ability to simulate electro-mechanical systems in Simulink.

 

Good to Have:

HVAC and chiller system domain background/knowledge. Experience in research and development using HIL platforms around power electronics circuits. Strong power electronics expertise with experience in designing active front ends and inverters. Experience performing simulations and analysis of power electronics circuits. Strong knowledge of converters, inverters, and switching devices. Experience designing control algorithms for induction motors and IPM (Interior Permanent Magnet) motors. Ability to perform thermal calculations and characterization of power structures and motor drives.

 

Preferred Experience:

Experience working on GM, Ford, or other diesel truck engines. Proven track record in diesel engine calibration and control system design.

 

Responsibilities:

Develop and document detailed calibration system requirements for diesel engines. Design and manage key strategic interfaces within diesel engine calibration and engine control systems. Coordinate with the testing lab based in Detroit to develop test requirements and ensure alignment with project objectives. Collaborate with other engineering teams to define and execute testing strategies for engine calibration. Provide technical support to other engineers by performing root cause analysis based on test data and calibration results. Utilize data-driven insights to support the development of corrective actions and improvements. Capture and analyze empirical data related to engine performance and emissions. Employ data analysis techniques to identify performance trends, calibration inconsistencies, and optimization opportunities. Design and implement tests that identify opportunities to improve engine performance and emissions. Propose and implement calibration changes that enhance engine efficiency, power output, and emissions reduction. Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and best practices in diesel engine calibration, control systems, and emissions testing.
