AREA OF FOCUS FOR THE JOB AND SPECIFIC FOCUS AREA RESPONSIBILITIES
This position will work directly with the Police Mounted Unit. The position duties will include attending to the health, care, medical, feeding and well-being of the animals in the Mounted Unit and maintaining sanitary conditions within the horse barn. The primary work location for this position is in the horse barn and in an outdoor work environment. Prior experience working with horses is not required.
The hours for this position will be Tuesday-Saturday 7:30am-4:00pm. Relevant experience includes grooming, evaluating the animal for medical concerns/issues (teeth/mouth inspections, hoof inspections, cut/abrasion care) and administering medications prescribed by a veterinarian. Additional relevant experience includes maintaining sanitary conditions of a horse barn and stalls, to include daily cleaning of the stalls, the removal of soiled hay, mats, and bedding, maintaining of paddocks and exercise arenas, maintaining horse saddles, pads, and bridles, and preparing horses for riding.
All Division of Police employees must comply with the Division's tattoo policy. The tattoo policy requires that Division personnel: 1. Division personnel shall have no tattoos on the head, neck, or hands unless they are cosmetic in nature (for example, wedding bands, eyebrows, eyeliner, etc.) and otherwise conform with and do not violate the Division’s grooming and appearance policies. 2. Division personnel shall have no tattoos anywhere on their body that depict obscene, gang-related, extremist, or otherwise offensive images, which may bring the Division into disrepute.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge of the use of simple tools; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to complete simple reports; ability to perform a variety of manual tasks; ability to lift weights up to fifty (50) pounds without assistance; ability to work for prolonged periods under adverse climatic conditions.
DESCRIPTION/LISTING/ESTIMATED DURATION OF THE SELECTION PROCESS

For any position within the Division of Police, the hiring process will also include the completion of an extensive personal history questionnaire and a polygraph examination. The selection process can take as little as 3 weeks and up to 3 months.
Under immediate supervision, is responsible for performing routine manual labor; performs related duties as required.
Examples of Work
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
Assists skilled and semi-skilled workers, construction crews, and maintenance crews in performing daily work assignments;
Upkeeps areas including mowing and edging, picking up trash, raking leaves, cleaning windows, and/or removing ice and snow from steps and walkways;
Cleans up work area after completion of a job;
Plants, weeds, and waters flowers, shrubs, trees, and lawns;
Performs minor maintenance on equipment, grounds, and buildings;
Lifts and moves heavy materials (e.g., soil, gravel, etc.);
Drives a vehicle to transport coworkers and/or work materials;
Completes simple reports as required by supervisor;
May operate powered hand tools such as saws and drills.
Minimum Qualifications
Any experience and training which would provide the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities listed in this job class specification.
Possession of a valid driver’s license may be required for some positions.
