**STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:**
The Lactation Consultant serves as the hospital expert resource on human lactation. The focus is to facilitate the development and maintenance of skills necessary to ensure optimal care of the breastfeeding couplet. The Lactation Consultant is responsible for identifying and correcting lactation problems; may plan and lead breastfeeding classes for expecting mothers; advises physicians and healthcare providers on lactation problems experienced by patients; responsible for staff education related to lactation support for mother.
**BASIC KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:** **Education / License / Certifications:**
+ Currently licensed in the State of Tennessee or compact state as a Registered Nurse and in good standing
+ International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC) or currently enrolled in certification program (must obtain certification within 12 months of hire)
+ BLS Certification required NRP certification required within 6 months of hire or placement
+ STABLE
**Ex** **p** **e** **r** **ience / Skills:**
+ A minimum of three years of experience working with both mothers and newborns.
