Duties Description The incumbent will be responsible for the duties described in the Department of Civil Service Classification Standard for Junior Landscape Architect, SG-15. You will report to the Regional Landscape Architect (or the Regional Environmental Contact) and provide assistance to the other Landscape Architects, Environmental Specialists, Engineers, and other professionals within the Department. The general job duties may include, but are not limited to: preparation and review of various project documents (i.e., reports, plans, specifications, etc.) for landscape development, environmental compliance, and for pedestrian and bicycle provisions; preparation of various environmental assessments and permits (i.e., visual, air, noise, wetlands, water resources, cultural resources, etc.); review of consultant prepared documents; attending various meetings as necessary – both in the office and with the public; plant material inspection and approval; curb ramp/sidewalk inspection and approval; preparing miscellaneous office correspondence; maintain records and files; and review Highway Work Permits.Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).*To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:Landscape Architect Trainee:1.A bachelor’s or higher-level degree in Landscape Architecture; or2.A Landscape Architect’s license from any state or political subdivision of the United States.As a Landscape Architect Trainee, you will serve a 24-month traineeship that leads to Assistant Landscape Architect, Grade 20. To advance to Assistant Landscape Architect, you must have obtained proof of passing any two sections of the LARE and successfully completed the requirements of the traineeship to the satisfaction of the appointing authority. At the discretion of the appointing authority, early advancement to the Assistant Landscape Architect is possible if you have obtained any two sections of the LARE and have successfully completed twelve months of the traineeship. It is your responsibility to notify the appointing authority’s personnel office upon obtaining proof of passing any two sections of the LARE. Failure to obtain a passing result on any two sections of the LARE within 24-months will result in removal from your position.Assistant Landscape Architect:1.A bachelor’s or higher-level degree in Landscape Architecture; and proof of passing any two sections of the LARE; OR2.A Landscape Architect’s license from any state or political subdivision of the United States.Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
Additional Comments *This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State.
