As a member of our nursing staff you will play an instrumental role in instructing veterinary students in technical skills and perform medical treatments and procedures as directed by our veterinarians. The individual in this position will assist clinicians with Inpatient, Outpatient and Emergency patient care. Will act as a surgical nurse utilizing proper clinical techniques in support of the Large Animal Hospital Surgery Service and assist with anesthetic inductions and recoveries, surgical prep and surgical procedures. Will prepare, set up surgical suites and care for surgical instruments and equipment. Duties also include restraining horses and other large animals for exams and diagnostic procedures, jog horses, and aid in the positioning of horses in the MRI and CT units throughout the workday several days of every workweek. Diagnostic Imaging procedures and Service Administrative duties including communication with Clients and Referring Veterinarians. Additional important duties include internal communication, efficiency, organization and charge capture as well as improving the clients’ experience when admitting inpatients and outpatients. This is a physically demanding position that requires excellent horse handling skills and experience and the candidate must not have any medical conditions or implants which would preclude entry into the high-field MRI suite. Minimum qualifications: Vet Tech Level 1: High School Diploma; two (2) years of work experience loading, unloading, restraining, handling and treating horses or one (1) years of work experience loading, unloading, restraining, handling and treating horses in a veterinary academic teaching hospital. Certification/licensure as a Veterinary Technician is preferred, but NOT required. Vet Tech Level 2: High School Diploma; four (4) years of work experience loading, unloading, restraining, handling and treating horses or two (2) years of work experience loading, unloading, restraining, handling and treating horses in a veterinary academic teaching hospital. Certification/licensure as a Veterinary Technician IS required. Work Schedule: Hours consist of typically working five-(5) 8-hour shifts per work week. Typically assigned work hours are Monday – Friday, varying shifts between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. as required by the service. This position may require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or “on-call duty.” Individual in this position is considered essential personnel, which may include reporting to work during Main Campus closures.
