Job Description HII has a need for a Laser and Optics Engineer to perform modeling and simulation of optics, optical systems, and atmospheric beam propagation. These efforts will support design, analysis, lab testing, field testing, capability validation, root cause assessments, troubleshooting, and product improvement. This opportunity resides within Warfare Systems, a business group within HII’s Mission Technologies division. HII works within the weapon systems communities to defend our nation’s interests at home and abroad. Our deep expertise in hardware and software development, prototyping, testing, and production enables us to support critical missions at scale for federal agency partners. Essential Job Responsibilities Translate between and among system requirements and optical component specifications Lead and support subsystem trade studies that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Perform technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, evaluates alternatives including cost and risk, supportability and analyses Translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications Communicate task status with clarity and brevity Identify, articulate, and manage risks Manage team, customer, and supplier/partner relationships Write reportsMinimum Qualifications
9 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 7 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or 4 years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field.
Experience performing laser system analysis with codes such as Zemax Experience performing laser atmospheric propagation analysis with wave optics and scaling law and codes such as HELCOMES Hands-on experience with lasers and optics Strong oral and written communication skills Self-motivated with strong work-ethic Experience working on government contracts Technical and problem-solving intuition Curiosity and ability to work comfortably with complexity Ability to anticipate and mitigate technical programmatic implications of laser/optical system challenges Must be able to communicate effectively with government stakeholders, company leadership, and technical subject matter experts in a wide range of disciplines Clearance: Must be able to obtain a SECRET security clearance Preferred Requirements 7 years experience with a Masters or Ph.D in lasers/optics. Experience designing and testing high energy laser (HEL) laser and optical systems Experience specifying, procuring, and testing lasers and optical system components and subsystems Experience as a Laser Safety Officer Experience building-out test capabilities Experience working on Department of Defense contracts Experience supporting Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Clearance: Active SECRET security clearance Physical Requirements Office, industrial or shipboard environment. Capable of climbing ladders and tolerating confined spaces and extreme temperature variances.
