Laser Failure Analyst/Reliability Engineer

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Perform Failure Mode Analyses (FMAs) on failed units to determine root cause. Own the Root Cause Analysis Report (RCAR) process for various product lines. Perform hands-on FMA of CO2 Lasers and associated products.  Document data and FMA processes and procedures used.  Organize and present data collected for review by internal team.    Initiate targeted corrective actions to address Failure Modes utilizing the Corrective Action Request (CAR) and Continuous Improvement Project (CIP) systems. Locate, analyze, and report data in existing databases to calculate reliability metrics, and determine correlations between failure modes and process variables. Support product line teams with failure analysis on field returns and NPI product. Work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality and Reliability to develop method and processes for failure analysis. Identify outside facilities for specialty analysis support. Participate and present at NPI meetings for new product. 

2. Support key customers and Field Service

Perform analysis of specific customer returns. Participate in marketing/Engineering meeting with customers to address reliability performance issues. Create presentations and reports for key customers. Track key metrics for failure analysis and publish for product line teams and key customers. Help train field service and product support personnel related to product function and field failure analysis to identify failures in the field. Help train Service Technicians on evaluation and failure mode detection of various product. Create Field Service Bulletins relating to product issues, field issues, etc. Support Field Service and Product Support escalations to solve customer issues and provide accurate analysis of field data. Support the NPI process and represent Service by providing data on similar product issues, ensuring service items are addressed in the NPI process, representing Service on the NPI project teams. Assist in establishing product or customer quality and reliability specifications.

 

Education & Experience

Desired Qualifications:

M.S. degree and > 5 years of related experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

B.S. degree and > 5 years of related experience. 

Skills

Continuous improvement mindset – improves product and processes through on-going testing and analysis. Demonstrated problem-solving abilities combined with hands-on experience with lasers and/or optical components. Proficiency in industry-standard problem-solving techniques such as 5 Whys, 8D, Fishbone analysis. Self-motivated to thoroughly document data and test results.  Ability to work on and complete multiple complex independent tasks in to mutually agreed upon schedules.              Excellent data collection and analysis skills. Capable user of standard data analysis tools (Excel, Access, Minitab, Weibull ++, Alta etc., Labview).  Proven LEADER in a team environment.  Ability to complete several complex tasks in a timely way.  Expertise in evaluation techniques for failure mode analysis  Good project management skills.  Ability to clearly articulate work plans, schedules, and resource requirements.  Strong facilitation and influencing skills in working with other departments (Engineering, Operations, Marketing): Ability to assertively negotiate mutually acceptable plans and outcomes, ability to effectively direct efforts of others on team. Experience with test and measurement of laser systems and optical components. Some travel required (< 10%) 

Working Conditions

 

Office environment and work in a laboratory are expected. Fully on-site work.

Physical Requirements

Work in a laser laboratory with potential occasional lifting of heavy equipment or parts
