Summary The incumbent functions as a laundry worker for the Environmental Management Services (EMS) within the Eastern Kansas Healthcare System located in Leavenworth, KS. This position performs work associated with textile care processing and works on a rotating basis performing a variety of duties that deal with identification of specifics related to laundry, the unloading, sorting in accordance with classification procedures and other related processes. Responsibilities The incumbent performs duties in the Laundry facilities located at the Leavenworth VA Medical Center in Leavenworth, KS. Some of the duties include, but may not be limited to: Operates manual marking machine to identify hospital linens. Classifies and segregates soiled articles into groups according to the various washing requirements. Removes semi-dried large items from hand trucks. Shakes out creases and sorts articles of like types into groups to facilitate feeding through the flatwork ironer. Feeds sheets, towels, etc., into the flatwork ironer. Straightens the edges and smooths the wrinkles from the material as it is fed into the machine. Catches, folds, and stacks the articles as they emerge from the ironer. Separates the rough dried textiles (other than flatwork) by type and folds in accordance with established procedures. Checks for soiled items and those which require mending, referring them to the supervisor for further processing. Assists in the immediate hanging of durable press garments after removal from tumble dryer to eliminate wrinkles and facilitate processes. Folds rough dry textiles according to established procedures. Builds linen carts and delivers clean linen to patient care areas and other textiles to various areas of the Medical Center. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is Ability to do the job of a Laundry worker without more than normal supervision. Technical Practices (includes practices, which must be incorporated in order to accomplish the duties of the position). Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc. (Ability to follow the types of instructions associated with this job). Knowledge of materials (including experience recognizing different type of fabrics and types of items washed). Dexterity and Safety (ability to operate with dexterity and safety). Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the position will be that normally required of a laundry worker. Some heavy movement of laundry weighing up to 800 pounds and use of conveyors are required along with the stamina to perform physical labor. Continuous walking, standing, stooping, bending, lifting and arduous physical effort is required in the performance of the manual tasks described; such as continuous folding and processing of linens and operating powered equipment over extended periods of time. Working Conditions: Works in hot humid temperatures, handling soiled and/or contaminated textile items where Personal Protective Equipment is required. May be subject to noises, skin irritations, cuts, and bruises. The work performed requires continuous walking when making inspections in various areas. Moderate effort is expended when performing textile operation tasks.
