Hiring Unit: Faculty of Law

Course Number: LAWG 554

Course Title: Pre-Publication Review: The Legal Analyses of Media and Entertainment

Course Credits: 1

Term: Focus Week Winter 2025

Course Schedule: Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs 835-1125 (Student Affairs Office will contact you if there is a change to the date/time)

Location: Chancellor Day Hall

Course Description: Have you ever wondered what legal measures need to be taken before a movie or television series can be broadcast to the public? In this course, we will explore the principles of media and entertainment law as they pertain to pre-publication and errors and omissions review. We will identify and analyze common legal issues that film and television producers, as well as documentarians and journalists encounter in their producing, including defamation, privacy law, misappropriation of personality and copyright law. These legal issues will be teased out during interactive demonstrations with real-world productions.

The course will offer a practical understanding of the work of a media and entertainment lawyer; from vetting materials prior to broadcast and advising clients on how to responsibly undertake production, to making risk-based analyses on whether certain materials should be included in the final cut of a show or movie and what common issues emerge post-publication/broadcast and how they can be addressed.

Students are asked to familiarize themselves with the substantive content in the required readings prior to commencement of course – this will allow class time to be spent primarily on the practical deployment of that content.

The University may, at its discretion, assign the person of choice to give this Course/Teaching.

Please note that this course will be allocated to a member using an exemption as per article 15.03.03 of the MCLIU collective agreement.
