About the Opportunity

 

Westinghouse Electric Canada is a leading supplier of custom equipment, process systems and engineering consultant services for the Nuclear industry in Canada.  The successful candidate will join an innovative team that supports Westinghouse’s mission to provide clean energy solutions.

 

It is a bona fide job requirement to be eligible and authorized to travel to the U.S. on Westinghouse business, and such travel is subject to the rules and regulations of the U.S. Department of Energy, as well as compliance with all applicable U.S. export laws and regulations.

 

What will you do?

This position is responsible for (a) developing, (b) implementing, (c) maintaining, and (d) reinforcing Westinghouse EHS programs, tools and standards, including training and communication in a manner that ensures safety of all workers at the Peterborough facility, environmental protection, compliance to applicable regulatory and internal requirements as well as business needs. 

 

Key to this role is building and maintaining strong relationships with the engineering and operations onsite team to support them in driving best in class / showcase Westinghouse manufacturing facility to achieve rigorous EHS expectations as well as Continuous Improvement in its operations.

 

Your day to day: 

Develops, evaluates, implements, and directs environmental, health and safety policies, programs, training and procedures at the site to ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards, regulations and requirements. Develops and implements strategies to reduce EHS risks at the facility, including annual safety improvement planning Promotes EHS awareness throughout the organization though effective employee communications, participation, and programming Promote the successful integration of EHS risk management into key business operations, processes, and results Identify, analyze, and present EHS data to support monitoring and measuring to drive improvement initiatives Review EHS requirements for contracts, orders and changes to the facility and advise leadership and production of EHS impacts and risks; assist with risk mitigation of new impacts/risks Serve as EHS point of contact for EHS issues and events for the facility, ensures proper and timely investigation and reporting of EHS incidents including determination of cause and implementation of corrective and preventive actions Directs and mentors other EHS professionals Support EHS initiatives at other Canada locations. Develops criteria for and supervises or directly conducts EHS assessments and/or inspections Prepare and manage site Industrial Hygiene Plan Source and manage EHS contractors that perform EHS services (e.g. Fire Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Training). Prepare and submit safety, environmental, waste sustainability and ESG reporting, internally and externally Coordinates waste shipment (s) and maintain the hazardous waste program including requirements under the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA). Resource / support to the Joint Health and Safety Committee Resource / support to the First Aid Team and Fire Marshals. Responsible for site-compliance with WEC Security protocols, providing guidance to site visitor POCs as needed. Acts as the site Risk Coordinator, responsible for maintaining the Key Business Risk Register and annual Risk Reduction Plan. This role requires onsite work at the plant in Peterborough, Ontario.  There is need for travel (including international).  ~10% travel, including international, is required. 

 

What will you bring?

Who you are: 

Post-secondary degree/diploma in a relevant technical field. 10 years of progressive experience in a moderate to high industrial safety / health risk workplace. CRSP or equivalent professional certification(s) is preferred Experience with the ISO 45001 standard and it’s application in practice is preferred JHSC Certified is preferred Certification in Lean / Six Sigma programs is preferred.

 

Highly knowledgeable of environmental, safety and health regulations and regulatory agency interaction processes. Specific knowledge of Ontario regulations related to air, water, waste and hazardous waste shipment is required. Demonstrated attention to detail, effective decision-making in a fast-paced setting. Ability to fulfill responsibilities with a global mindset Demonstrated strong analytical, problem solving and organizational skills. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing including the ability to effectively present information to workers as well as to leadership. Highly knowledgeable in the methods used for hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control. Strong ability to respond effectively to sensitive issues. Must be able to comprehend, analyze and interpret complex documents. Requires advanced analytical and quantitative skills. Strong ability and flexibility to work in a team setting and lead a team when necessary. Demonstrated effective interpersonal, negotiation and persuasion skills Proficient in MS Office Suite and personal computer skills (required) Knowledgeable of behavior-based safety principles and safety management systems.
