The College is home to four academic departments serving both graduate and undergraduate students, two departments with graduate-only programs, two interdisciplinary degree-granting programs, and a federal cooperative research institute. Position Summary TheLead Academic Advisor for First-Year Engineering Programsis a key member of the college’s undergraduate advising team, responsible for providing academic advising and managing the academic advising structure for first-year engineering students. The advisor will work closely with students to support their transition into university life, help them navigate the first-year engineering program, and prepare them for successful progression into their respective engineering disciplines. This position will also supervise and mentor a team of advisors and a group of undergraduate assistants dedicated to the first-year program. This position plays a vital role in aligning academic advising with the college’s mission to support student retention, success, and timely progression through the engineering program. Required Job Qualifications + Bachelor’s degree in engineering, education, counseling, higher education administration, or a related field. + A minimum of two (2) years of experience in academic advising, student support services, or a similar student-focused role in higher education. + Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively advise, mentor, and manage as demonstrated by application materials and previous experience with public speaking. + Organizational and problem-solving skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. + Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with experience supporting students from diverse backgrounds in an academic setting. Essential Duties Job Duty CategoryStudent Advising and Retention Support Duty/Responsibility + Provide comprehensive academic advising to approximately 75 students in the common first-year engineering program. This includes but is not limited to: + Assist students in developing educational plans and selecting courses that align with their academic goals and prerequisites for various engineering disciplines. + Offer guidance on transitioning from the common first-year program to specific engineering departments, helping students explore major options and course sequencing. + Foster a supportive advising environment by promoting student involvement in co-curricular opportunities such as research, study abroad, honors programs, and student organizations, while encouraging timely graduation and progression through the engineering curriculum. + Cultivate a proactive advising culture by regularly checking in with students, monitoring their academic progress, and providing timely interventions to ensure they stay on track for success. Percentage Of Time20% Job Duty CategoryManagement and Leadership Duty/Responsibility + Oversee classroom scheduling for first-year College of Engineering courses, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and coordination with the registrar’s office to meet the needs of the program and other college courses. + Foster a culture of proactive student support by encouraging advising staff to regularly check in with students, monitor their progress, and implement early interventions to promote student success and retention. Ensure that these practices are integrated into the team’s advising approach. + Work with the university registrar to ensure that any special scheduling needs for courses in the first-year curriculum, including room assignments and time slots, are completed accurately and efficiently. + Develop and implement a method for distributing advising loads among the team, ensuring that no advisor is responsible for more than 275 students, and adjusting workloads to maintain balance and optimize student support. + Supervise, hire, train, evaluate, and mentor a team of academic advisors who will also be advising students in the common first-year curriculum. + Provide training, oversight, and professional development for the advising team while leading efforts to innovate and enhance the first-year advising experience, ensuring high-quality student support and alignment with best practices. + Collaborate with faculty and administrators in the College of Engineering to ensure that advising aligns with the objectives of the new curriculum. + Responsible for managing first-year course and curriculum changes in CIM . + Coordinate summer orientation programs for the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering, including the hiring, training, and supervision of student hourly workers to assist with orientation activities, ensuring a smooth and welcoming transition for incoming students. + Hire, train, evaluate, and co-supervise a large team of undergraduate learning assistants, mentors, and tutors.
