MITRE’s Artificial Intelligence Innovation Center's Robotics and Autonomous Systems Department is an innovative team of engineers focused on the development of cutting-edge autonomous systems, robotics capabilities, and AI solutions for a safer world. The Robotics and Autonomous Systems Department has an exciting opportunity for a Lead Autonomous Systems Expert. A successful candidate for this position will serve a critical role in enabling advanced autonomy capabilities both for our sponsors as well as internal efforts at MITRE.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Maintain knowledge of advances of autonomy and robotics capabilities in industry and academiaLeverage technical expertise to evaluate and improve AI/Autonomy system performanceProvide thought and team leadership centered around autonomy/AI technology adoption on robotics hardware and cloud-based computing environmentsDevelop, propose, and lead research in the field of autonomy and AIEvaluate autonomy or AI solutions and provide guidance to sponsors based on their requirementsWork on topics in robotics-relevant fields, such as computer vision, deep learning, machine learning, planning, human machine teaming, and multi-robot systemsBuild a team, capabilities, and work program in one of more growth area for Autonomous Systems (e.g., maritime autonomy, healthcare robotics, space robotics)Help department and division execute strategy around enabling high-consequence applications of Autonomy, including necessary assurance, T&E, and societal implicationsBasic Qualifications:
Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or Software Engineering, or similar field; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experienceMust be a U.S. citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearanceUnderstand the breadth of autonomous systems across different domains (DoD, Services, Intelligence Community, DHS, Industry and Academia)Experience in robotics-relevant fields, such as computer vision, deep learning, machine learning, planning, human machine teaming, and multi-robot systemsAbility to articulate autonomy-specific challenges (in perception, reasoning, behaviors, collaborations), discuss critical issues, and identify gapsFamiliarity with the state of the art in the fieldKnowledge of the challenges of developing autonomous and AI systems that are robust in real world scenariosProficiency in use of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel, and WordMust have demonstrated proficiency and strength in verbal, written, PC, presentation, and communications skillsProven ability to work independently to learn new technologies, techniques, processes, languages, platforms, systemsExcellent written and verbal communication skills along with the ability to foster relationship development with sponsorsPreferred Qualifications:
