The Opportunity with McKinstry

We are looking for a Lead Boiler Operator to join our EcoDistrict team in Moscow, ID. You will assist the Supervisor in guiding and coordinating the work and supporting the team, escalating any performance concerns directly to the Supervisor. The subject matter expert for all plant operations, safety procedures, water testing and treatment procedures, and plant processes. Provide support and training for the Steam Plant Operations team. Additional responsibilities include:

Coordinate, monitor and operate high pressure wood fired and gas boilers and all associated equipment.Assist in writing and updating standard operating procedures (SOP’s) for plantUse critical thinking to troubleshoot and diagnose problems related to high pressure boiler operations, water systems, and all related equipment.Make operational decisions and perform emergency maintenance and necessary repairs to maintain a continuous supply of steam and compressed air for any situations that arise.Decide when to switch or shut down systems or adding boilers to ensure constant, continuous steam and air supply to campus.Record and analyze test results for proper adjustment, treatment, or repairs necessary of hot process water softeners, charcoal filtering, and sodium zeolite softening systems.Monitor, record and assist in the maintenance of chilled water systems as needed.Perform preventative maintenance for the longevity and efficiency of the boiler.Extensive knowledge for the operation of the various Energy Plant distribution systems including all pipelines, lay-outs, and directional flows.Create schedules and cover absences and time off requests as necessary.Receive, document, and respond professionally to after hour calls and emergencies, and relay calls to appropriate on-call personnel.Create and monitor cleaning schedules to ensure that daily and routine cleanings are being completed satisfactorily.Ensure that safety regulations, policies and procedures are followed at all times and report any concerns to the Supervisor in a timely manner.Conduct required safety and operation trainings and ensure records are maintained and all employees are current.Train new Operators and support ongoing training for Apprentices.Support supervisor with maintaining inventory of consumables including PPE, as well as water chemicals and testing supplies.Support supervisor with shift change meeting, ensuring a smooth transition of work and information to next shift.Other duties as assigned.

What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry:

High School Diploma or GEDFirst Class Boiler Operators license4-8 years of boiler operator experience, 2 of which must be specific to the University of Idaho Steam Plant.Must be able to fire, operate, troubleshoot, shutdown, and maintain high pressure gas and wood fired broilers and associated equipment.Must be able to proficiently and routinely use three additional skills including but not limited to advanced water chemistry and treatment, practical cutting and welding, metal fabrication, plumbing and pipefitting, programming electronic controllers, mechanical repairs, electrical wiring and troubleshooting, reading and drawing blueprints, schematics and line drawings, maintain computers, databases and network systems, troubleshoot and rebuild steam traps and assist with maintenance of Energy Plant Systems.Advanced knowledge of basic safety protocols including Lockout/Tagout, working in confined spaces, and certified in First Aid/CPR. Able to train other in safety protocols.Must be able to make critical decisions and provide leadership in high stress situations and emergencies.Able to work independently and make decisions with minimal supervision.Valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required and must be able to meet policy requirements for driving University vehicles.Must be able to work as needed for on-call emergencies, after hours, holidays, weekends, and campus closures.

The pay range for this position is $26.06 - $37.45 per hour; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This is a non-exempt role and will be paid hourly. A bonus may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. Base pay information is based on market location.
