Lead Embedded Firmware Engineer
Johnson Service Group
Johnson Service Group (JSG) is looking for a Lead Embedded Firmware Engineer to contribute to cutting-edge projects involving high-speed power systems. This role focuses on advanced motor technologies, power electronics, and high-performance controllers. The selected candidate will play a crucial role in firmware development for power applications, working with industry-standard DSP chips such as NXP, Freescale, or similar platforms.
Key Responsibilities: Lead the creation and optimization of embedded firmware using C/C++ and Assembly, specifically for power conversion and motor control systems. Enhance existing firmware or develop entirely new solutions for advanced power electronics applications. Collaborate with internal and external teams to refine system architecture and ensure operational efficiency. Prepare comprehensive technical documentation aligned with software certification and regulatory requirements, covering areas such as requirements specifications, design descriptions, validation plans, and quality assurance guidelines. Perform real-time debugging, troubleshooting, and rigorous testing of firmware solutions. Establish test strategies to validate firmware functionality and ensure compliance with specifications. Define and implement firmware lifecycle processes, maintaining structured development and deployment practices. Provide ongoing firmware support for in-house testing and field service needs. Partner with hardware and control system teams to develop and deploy mission-critical software for both next-generation and existing product lines. Qualifications & Experience: Bachelor's or Master’s in Electrical Engineering (PhD preferred) with 8+ years of industry experience. At least 5 years of hands-on expertise in C/C++ firmware development, specifically in motor control and power electronics. Strong grasp of control system theory, including modeling, simulation, stability analysis, and signal processing. Practical experience with NXP MPC5643L/MPC5744P microcontrollers and low-level firmware development. Proficiency in device driver implementation (e.g., ADC, PWM, Timers, SPI, UART, CAN). Knowledge of communication protocols such as Modbus, SPI, RS485, and CAN Bus J1939. Familiarity with safety-critical standards, including RTCA DO-178C, MIL-STD-461, ISO 26262, and MISRA coding guidelines. Experience using lab equipment like oscilloscopes, data loggers, and software development tools. Strong background in software version control (Git, SVN) and requirements management. Understanding of power electronics fundamentals and electric machine principles. Preferred Skills: Experience designing firmware for compliance with safety standards in industrial, military, or aviation applications. Knowledge of Field Oriented Control (FOC) and three-phase power management. Expertise in flux estimation, resolver-based control, and sensorless techniques. Familiarity with various PWM modulation schemes, including space vector and sinusoidal PWM. Solid foundation in digital, analog, and power electronic circuit design. Location: Cerritos, CA (local candidates preferred)
Salary: $120,000 - $180,000 (DOE)
