Job Purpose

The R&D and Innovation Engineer is responsible for engaging with the New England electric business (engineering, asset management, and operations) to evaluate, implement, and develop new technology to deploy on National Grid’s transmission and distribution networks. This role conducts all program and performance management and administration for technology deployments to ensure pilots and demonstration are providing value and all new capabilities are being implemented into business processes working with process and performance excellence teams. This role is also responsible for knowledge transfer such that technologies are being adapted into our asset management and engineering capabilities.  Engage with external partners (universities, vendors, national labs) to better collaborate on technology deployments and ensure National Grid is leveraging best in class learnings and capabilities development when deploying new technologies, including alignment with National Grid counterparts in New England and the UK.

Key Accountabilities Lead the identification and formulation of strategic initiatives specific to electrical assets. Responsible for engaging within NE Electric teams to evaluate the value, benefit cost analysis, and business case for moving forward with new technologies on our network, including but not limited to energy storage resources and power flow control devices. Lead interdisciplinary technical teams through the optioneering process, develop project scopes, cost estimates and project schedules applying National Grid’s capital delivery process. Recommend asset condition-based capital projects to internal National Grid management. Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports of technical problems, investigative findings, and engineering recommendations. Participate in project estimating and economic analysis.

 

Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required

Able to motivate, counsel, coach, and develop direct reports and others.Experience establishing clearly defined goals and standards of employee performance.

Qualifications A Bachelors degree in an engineering discipline or science is required 6 years of relevant work experience with an Advanced degree, Professional License (PE) or certification or 10 years of relevant work experience required.  Strong negotiating and influencing skills with the ability to make persuasive presentations to small and large audiences. Thorough understanding of electrical engineering concepts such as load flow, relay protection, metering, stability, voltage regulation, power factor, etc. Familiarity with grid modernization technologies. Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills. Proven ability to work across multiple projects and departments in a team-oriented environment. Effective collaboration with Asset Strategy and Data and Systems teams to develop value-adding solutions for the Company. Knowledge of regulatory requirements and cost recovery processes a plus Valid driver’s license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy

 

More Information

Salary: $145,000 - $170,000

Internal candidates will be assessed and provided offers against the minimum qualifications of this role and their individual experience. 

 

Please be advised that due to the nature of this position, incumbents are subject to federal Drug & Alcohol safety regulations governing US Department of Transportation ("DOT") covered positions, including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA). As such, the Company’s testing programs and policies regarding the use of federally prohibited drugs or alcohol, for recreational or medical purposes, will remain in effect for these safety-sensitive, DOT covered positions.
