Job Title: Lead Estimator - High Voltage Transmission & Distribution

Description: We are seeking an experienced Lead Estimator to join our team at Edison Power Constructors, a part of Primoris, in the utilities industry. As a Lead Estimator, you will play a crucial role in estimating costs and generating accurate project proposals for the design and construction of high voltage transmission and distribution systems.
You will be responsible for analyzing project requirements, conducting site visits, and collaborating with engineering teams to develop comprehensive estimates. Your expertise in high voltage equipment, construction methods, and industry standards will ensure that our proposals are well-prepared and aligned with client specifications. Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining and updating cost databases, keeping abreast of industry trends, and participating in bid review meetings.
The successful candidate will possess exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, a strong attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. This role requires a thorough understanding of high voltage equipment and construction practices, as well as proficiency in estimating software and tools.
Key Responsibilities:
Analyze project requirements and specifications to develop accurate cost estimates. Conduct site visits and collaborate with engineering teams to gather necessary data. Prepare detailed material take-offs and labor estimates for high voltage transmission and distribution systems. Collaborate with procurement teams to source and evaluate suppliers and subcontractors. Review and analyze project plans, drawings, and technical specifications. Maintain and update cost databases to ensure accurate and up-to-date project information. Participate in bid review meetings and provide cost-related recommendations. Adjust estimates for different local labor agreements and yearly labor increases based on familiarity with Local 47/1245 and other locals outside of California.Project Bidding & Estimating:
Review project documents: Thoroughly analyze RFPs, drawings (including single line diagrams, layouts, and schematics), specifications, and contract terms for high-voltage projects. Conduct site visits: Travel to project locations to assess existing conditions, take measurements, identify potential obstacles, and determine material logistics. Material takeoff and pricing: Accurately quantify material requirements (cable, transformers, switchgear, insulators, etc.) from project plans and specifications. Research and obtain quotes from suppliers for competitive pricing. Labor estimates: Determine the labor hours required for different project phases (installation, testing, commissioning) based on historical data, crew productivity, and project complexity. Subcontractor coordination: Solicit and evaluate bids from subcontractors specializing in specific high-voltage tasks (e.g., grounding, civil works, specialized testing). Negotiate pricing and scope of work. Develop detailed cost breakdowns: Create comprehensive cost estimates that include material, labor, subcontracting, permits, transportation, overheads, and contingencies. Prepare bid packages: Assemble all necessary documentation, including cost breakdowns, project timelines, and company qualifications for submission to clients. Risk assessment: Identify potential risks and uncertainties associated with the project (e.g., material lead times, weather, regulatory changes) and factor contingency plans and costs into estimates.Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or field experience as a Journeyman Lineman in the powerline industry. Minimum of 5 years of experience in estimating high voltage transmission and distribution systems. Experience with major utilities in California and familiarity with Local 47/1245, as well as other locals outside of California. Ability to adjust estimates for different locals and yearly labor increases. Proficiency in estimating software and tools such as Bluebeam, AutoCAD, MS Excel, B2W, and Loadspring. Thorough understanding of high voltage equipment and construction practices. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent attention to detail and ability to produce accurate estimates. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with cross-functional teams.Salary range: $150 - 170k commensurate with skills and experience.
