Lead Firmware Engineer

The available position is for a Lead Firmware Engineer on the sustaining team in Indianapolis, Indiana as a part of a growing embedded systems product engineering organization. Primary products of responsibility include design, development, and improvement of electronic locking systems, access control, and security to support commercial markets.

A Lead Firmware Engineer is responsible for the Firmware operation of assigned modules within a larger system or an entire product family as well as providing guidance to teammates. Responsibilities include participation in firmware specification evolution, firmware architecture modifications, design, code development, debugging, module integration, participation in code reviews, documentation, unit/integration/system testing, and other assigned engineering tasks. The individual will be responsible to deliver to objectives including meeting deadlines and schedule. The individual may also be responsible for leading related product lifecycle process, tools, and projects.

What You will Do:

Lead firmware and/or product lifecycle related process, tools, and projectsAct as a primary interface for the firmware team on assigned project(s) to a cross functional project team including other engineering functions, manufacturing, external suppliers, program management, product, test lab, quality, customer support etc.Provide leadership to the firmware engineering team, which includes assessing, coaching, mentoring, motivating and developing talent.Organize and conduct firmware design and security reviews for product modificationsInstitutionalize firmware engineering process/tools standards to ensure high quality consistent output.Work with validation lab in supporting FW Engineering Validation Test code and Product validation code testingWork with and support manufacturing operations, quality, and on-going reliability testingProvide clear communications to engineering leadership and others outside of engineering.Work with the assigned team to produce full documentation of design changes and unit test cases. Utilize tools such as functional block diagrams, flow diagrams, simulations, state-diagrams, and others as required in the management of assigned products/projectsArchitect, design, develop and debug firmware for electronic locks, products and systemsMaintain and improve existing designs and source code to help attain the goal of a modular structureConduct Hardware & Firmware trade-offs to insure highest reliability and best performance in the intended application

What You Need to Succeed:

At least 8 years of experience in embedded software/firmware development in C languageStrong leadership, motivational and interpersonal skillsStrong engineering project management skillsAbility to work across multiple sites/teams domestically and internationallyDemonstrated technical coaching and mentoring skillsExperience in troubleshooting complex wireless communication and HW-SW co-design issues using data captures (Wireshark, logic analyzer traces etc.), meters, scopes etc.Demonstrated experience in firmware design, analysis and developmentSignificant experience in embedded microcontroller system designExperience working with Real Time Operating Systems (FreeRTOS, MQX etc.)Strong understanding of I2C, USB, UART and SPI interfacesFamiliarity with schematics, basic electronic components and connectionsExcellent communication and professional skillsHighly proficient in C-programming languageExcellent verbal and written communication skills to clearly articulate design ideasOpen to travel as necessary, approx. 10% annually 

Bonus Points For

Industry experience in access controls is beneficial Experienced with microprocessors and microcontrollers including PICxx, NXP Kinetis K-Series M-4 Cortex ARM, MC68xx, ATMEGA, MSP430, etc.., and their associated IDE and toolsAbility to use programming tools including Flash Programmer/EPROM Burner, Emulator/Debugger (ICE)Experience developing firmware for devices that communicate wirelessly using RFID and contactless smart cards, 802.11 Wi-Fi, BLE, ZigBee, Z-Wave etc.

Education & Minimum Years of Experience:

BS in Computer Science/Computer Engineering/Electrical Engineering, or similar degree8 years embedded electronics product design experience in Firmware development
