Summary You will serve as a LEAD INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the Occupational Health Branch, Code 106.21, Occupational Safety and Health Division, Code 106.2, Occupational Safety, Health and Environment (OSHE) Office, Code 106 of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD. Responsibilities You will be responsible for oversight of all technical aspects of the Industrial Hygiene program. You will draft directives, instructions, and standard operational procedures for NNSY. You will evaluate unusual hazards resulting from complex work processes or from combinations of hazardous materials and exposures not covered by existing health standards. You will advise, guide, and direct concerns occupational health hazards associated with a wide variety of shipyard industrial work situations, including large-scale, complex, hazardous, and high-risk chemical process industrial operations. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience performing personal exposure monitoring and implementing/verifying engineering controls and personal protective equipment based on results. Experience in communicating workplace exposures to personnel and prescribing protective equipment and corrective actions. Experience in performing surveillances/site visits to ensure regulatory requirements are being met. Experience in identifying and correcting deficiencies. Experience in running or overseeing programs related to Occupational Health / Industrial Hygiene (e.g. Respiratory Protection, Ergonomics, Toxic Metals, etc.) Experience ensuring that Navy and OSHA Safety and Health regulations are in compliance for the Shipyard's Occupational Health program. Experience working with the shipbuilding industry including the design, repair methods, standards, practices, techniques, and installation procedures to develop effective Occupational Safety Health standards. Education Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH).
