Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist

Summary:
The Lead Medical Technologist reports to the Pathology Manager. Under general supervision and in accordance with established policies and procedures performs independently in various laboratory sections of Pathology. Is assigned individually for overseeing the operations and the personnel performing testing in a specific laboratory section or shift. Performs non-routine and/or includes specialized tests and analyses. Such tests and analyses require the regular application of advanced problem solving and/or research skills due to their unusually difficult and complex nature. Individuals will be assigned to a specific laboratory section or discipline.

Responsibilities:
Performs the necessary investigations to identify the probable causes and suggest potential resolutions to incidents or issues raised by staff / clients; e.g. Outreach clients physicians etc.

Prepares and determines suitability of solutions reagents and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures; may prepare variations of same for special tests.

Applies an advanced level of knowledge and/or experience in a specific laboratory section in order to conduct and interpret routine specialized and or innovative tests and analyses.

Participates in research projects within assigned laboratory section as well as the review analysis development and implementation of new and improved clinical laboratory procedures and techniques.

Performs complex clinical laboratory tests in the Pathology Department which require a professional level of knowledge in order to monitor testing procedures and parameters and to interpret and analyze test results.

Records and reviews test results for accuracy and prepares test reports; relays test results and/or reports to physicians or others authorized to receive them. Discusses findings with physicians when necessary.

Utilizes advanced knowledge in order to function as a technical resource person for other technical personnel within the Specialists� area of specialization. Provides guidance and direction in resolving difficult problems such as discerning the cause of unusual or atypical reactions setting up complex testing procedures trouble-shooting equipment and instrumentation malfunctions defining testing parameters etc.

Regularly provides for the clinical instruction of students and residents within areas of specialization. May conduct formal classroom sessions to students and others presenting topics analyses technical background information etc. from area of specialization.

Participates in the orientation and training of new employees in their assigned laboratory section.

Participates in the review of QC and maintenance records providing recommendations as needed. May participate in the writing of laboratory procedures.

Monitors equipment operation; sets up and calibrates equipment troubleshoots operational problems and performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs. Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment glassware instruments work benches etc.

Performs the duties of a Medical Technologist or other duties in area of responsibility that may be assigned.

In concert with the Manager the Lead Medical Technologist will perform the following duties:

- Provide oversight to the daily performance of all testing in section or on shift

- Will resolve technical or procedural issues that arise out of typical work

- Submit revisions of policies and procedures to the Manager / Director for approval

- Employee interviews and recommendations as to hiring of potential candidates

- Employee scheduling

- Employee evaluations

- Meeting with employees to communicate relevant changes to procedures/polices

- Conflict resolution between employees

- Recommendations for disciplinary action

Fosters patient and family centered care and laboratory services in accordance with the Brown University Health and Rhode Island Hospital�s mission vision values with consideration of the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns. Performs all essential functions with consideration of the age-specific needs of geriatric adult and adolescent patient.

If performing HLA testing performs laboratory testing for evaluating immune status of transplant patient candidates before and after transplantation.  These tests lead to matching of donor organs and patient transplant recipients.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Bachelor�s degree in Medical Laboratory Science Medical Technology or closely related field or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA standards. 

National certification (or eligible) in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology by ASCP or equivalent. 

Advanced or Master�s degree work in area of specialization is desired but specialized knowledge can also be obtained through equivalent work experience.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

Two years experience in a clinical laboratory as a Medical Technologist Specialist or equivalent demonstrating technical expertise and problem resolution in a specialized area or shift. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Utilizing current policies and procedures will provide technical supervision for Specialists Technologists Technicians or students performing all Stat and routine testing. 

Supervision may include training guidance problem resolution technical oversight and review of related laboratory documentation.

In concert with the Manager will provide functional supervisory responsibility for laboratory staff including interviewing prospective employees scheduling of hours assignment of daily tasks training monitoring assignments providing input to evaluating performance and making recommendations on disciplinary actions.

Ability to operate equipment and instruments and to perform all procedures and tests within assigned laboratory section and interpret them for accuracy. 

Physical and visual dexterity necessary to conduct and interpret tests. 

Physical ability to stand and work at benches. 

Exposure to odors infectious materials toxins and other hazardous substances. 

Visual strain is encountered while closely examining specimens. 

Regularly required to stand and to lift and carry supplies etc. 

Rotational on-call assignment required.
